About MC436 Out and About (March 2009)

Photos taken during field trips for first year students on the BA Media & Communications programme at BCU Birmingham, who are studying visual design.

The purpose of the exercise was "Visualising Birmingham"

• Know where key sites of interest are located around the city;
• Understand the relationship and similarities between visual design and art;
• Be able to discuss how visual design relates to the world around you;

What we did in class:

The field trip was a ramble across Birmingham city centre in search of creatives and
creativity.

We were looking for:

• Interesting visual work: by this we mean things that are great and inspirational or things
that are terrible, and show us how not to communicate messages!
• All forms of visual design:
• Billboards and advertisements;
• Signage on buildings, including carved inscriptions, old fashioned signs, temporary
signs, etc.;
• Leaflets, fliers and other printed collateral (magazines, brochures, etc.);
• Street art and graffiti;

We were reflecting on:

• How visual design changes over time, and how designers can suggest progress or
heritage through their design choices (for example Moor Street Station in comparison to
New Street Station).
• How design organises the city;
• How the city organises design (and the other creative industries);
