About Matheran Hill Station
About this quaint hillstation called Matheran. Situated at the foot hills of the western ghats at an elevation of around 800 m (2,625 feet) about 90km from Mumbai. It was discovered by Hugh Poyntz Malet, the then district collector of Thane district in May 1850. The British and their cronies the Parsies loved it and there still exist huge properties and old bungalows from that era.
Matheran Hill Railway is a heritage railway in Maharashtra, India. It was built between 1901 and 1907 by Abdul Hussein Adamjee Peerbhoy, financed by his father Sir Adamjee Peerbhoy of Adamjee Group at the cost of Rs.16,00,000. Abdul Hussein Adamjee Peerbhoy was son of a renowned businessman Sir Adamjee Peerbhoy of Bombay, who visited Matheran often and wanted to build a railway to make it easier to get there. Hussain's plans for the railway were formulated in 1900 and construction started in 1904. The line was open to traffic by 1907. Neral, the starting point, is about midway between Mumbai and Pune. The railway covers a distance of 20 kilometres (12.67 miles), over large swathes of forest territory connecting Neral to Matheran in the Western Ghats hills near Karjat and Mumbai.
