So far everybody have resisted the temptation to play a rose but this is the reddest thing I could find around the house :-)

Perhaps I should have trotted out my rose in the first round - I might still be here! I am intrigued by the way the water drops leap out at you in this one as well as mine. Good luck SEngstrom

Sengstrom, I apologize to you that I haven't submitted my entry yet. I am still working on it. Life keeps interfering and getting in my way. =)

Hello Sengstrom, sorry you had to wait but I am still under deadline, barely. Good luck to you. =)

Berry Delight Full
I froze the strawberry to make it more red.

@Sengstrom - nice red to reddish orange- but the rose looks artificial - or maybe that's the point. The petals of the rose are completely devoid of texture. I am not big on the largish out of focus area either. While it does keep my eye trained on the subject my mind wanders as to what else I am seeing.

@paige - I like the uncluttered background. The red shade (maybe a bit of magenta) is pleasing and stands out well against the gray blue background. Love the detail on the glass and berry plus the hint of ice in the drink. Just a hint of the focus softening on the far side of the berry.

Thank you both for providing a larger version. :)

Sengstrom= i disagree with andy on this one...i think the red is superb!!! it is a gorgeous surrealist red tone that i cant get my eyes away from. the dof is super intense and therefore i would have gone for a tighter crop, though i enjoy the desaturation of the background against that amazing red. the rose is beautiful.
paige= good concept and possibly well done under the circumstances...the glass handle is bothering me a little as well as the background, it looks sort of arranged too much...i love the idea but i guess the red is a little pale and the strawberry is totally un-exploited and sort of dissapears at the back of the pic.

Both pictures have the beautiful RED, but I think SEngstrom has the most interesting subject for me. I love the smooth on the flower and the DOF.

For this match I think the biggest challenge is how each photographer handled the lighting. SEngstrom's rose is very vibrant but the light reflecting from the droplets is harsh and an unfortunate eye-grabber. The background bokeh in this is very nice.
Paiges shot which has lots of moisture drops on the glass and potentially on the berry as well has lit the scene so well that the moisture becomes visual interest .

Good shots both...

@ SEngstrom... gorgeous shade of red and absolutely nothing wrong with flowerpics ! I am liking the background and the fuzziness of the leaves.

@Paige... Nice set up - you can always be relied on to produce something out of the ordinary. The focus on the leaf of the strawberry is wonderfully sharp.

personal choice again...

The detail on the rose in SEngstrom's shot looks like it might have been washed out by a blur or noise reduction...was it?

Paige - I like your shot a lot. I think a bit of work with the colors would have really made your shot stand out even more, but adding the strawberry really *made* the picture. I think it would have looked fairly plain without one.

Although I was leaning toward the rose, when viewed large I felt the DoF couldn't have been improved. Paige, as always, you have put a lot of effort into your entry and the focus is spot on.

just to answer questions - it is an uncut rose - straight shot wide open with a 50mm f/1.8. no post proc other than a crop.
hicorydockery Posted 19 years ago
Sengstrom - Too much bokeh here - if I am even using the term correctly. I can't find a single element where the focus is spot on. Larger version didn't help on this one. The red however is stunning.

Sharp focus vs razor thin focal plain

Paige, u sure can make an inanimate object come alive.
Such innovation and very refreshing.
The frosty condensation on the glass is so inviting.
So enjoyable to look at.
I love the fun and vitality you bring to these matches.
And I'm glad you got more use out of your straws ;-)

congrats paige!
[fixing some spelling :-) ]
thanks also for the interesting comments although i must say i do not understand reasoning in many cases :-) different sensibilities i suppose.
@radiann - point taken about the droplets - it is a choice between a bright red and keeping detail there...
PaigeTurner Posted 19 years ago
Oh I can't believe this. Thank you , thank you, thank you! I'm so happy.
Now I am in trouble. I have nothing for the next round.

Thank you SEngstrom. Your rose is absolutely gorgeous. =)
