Random thoughts - to be honest, the original image left me a little cold, but as a blank canvas, it has proved an inspired choice- comments I would leave:
Wyrd:
great idea, lovely textures
Stephen Roy and Alice's Furrows:
great stuff, but to be honest as I know your stuff,I wouldn't expect anything other than great work - kind of nice to see your respective "house styles" coming through in an exercise like this, though...
Naccarato:
not come acrross your stuff before, but liked this a lot and will look out for you in future!
TBell: lovely stuff!

I personally think this has so little to do with photography.. This masterclass is about being creative.. But being creative with photoshop has nothing to do with shooting pics and being creative while doing so.. Using your own creativeness to get that one outstanding shot, being different from the rest.. Shoot a pic just the way you c it in your mind, instead of using a computerprogram to create what you and your camera just can't... At first i liked the "creative" masterclass, but since it is now going to photoshop and manipulating pics i say sorry, but that's not my thing..
(what doens't mean that i don't like the results shown above, but it just has nothing to do with photography for me..)

My two contributions...one using only Haint's original with saturation, hue, filters, etc...etc.
The second I have combined with my nothing photo, and then added a few effects to saturation, hue, etc.

I like the contrast and overall effect in the second one. Even without the texture of the first, it seems to have more depth.

Another go round. Tried something different.
This exercise really shows how diifferently artists see the same thing. The images couldn't be more different. Julie's water color soft colors, Wyrd's bright super nova, the topography of bfelice, zombizi primes mandala like image and snowblind frog's dark and moody renditions all point this out.
I think this has a lot to do with photography. It illustrates how the artist sees the world. I am a traditional B&W old style purist who has discovered digital photography and PS. It is all about the image, the final product. Creative approach informs all types and styles of photography, not just film.

thanks, tomusan. my thoughts exactly. i don't want to dictate but offer possibilities. this class will explore all kinds of different approaches to taking pictures. it is up to each individual artist to pick and choose ideas and techniques which suit his/her personality and creativity needs. i don't see any approach as more or less valid than another. it's all about having choices.

Perhaps there's also some value in exploring what's there technically for us to choose from even if in the end we choose not to use it.
As for the tweaks here so far, I really like Gianita's "Geography," with its sandiness that slows down the movement, makes it feel like tracks of movement that's gone. And also Snowblindfrog's Tweak #1, which is so very intense.

All of the images here have something interesting. A quite beautiful and intriguing set.
I fell in love with jeneveeve's molten organism and T Bell's batiks had strong appeal with their earthiness.
amsabri's polished intricacy made me smile but mifluki's transformation was the most surprising to me.
Tweak #1 by Snowblindfrog really grabbed me but I don't know why. Something familiar and known but yet not.
Wonderful fun. You are running a quite amazing workshop here, Haint.

i really like Julie70's first image, the one with the greens in the background. It reminds me of those photos they take in particle accelerators.
Snowblindfrog's first image kinda looks like a lobster, and I like how the image was flattened to look like an ink drawing.
Now I have more inspiration for my own attempts... So far, what I have learned from this exercise is that there is more to each photo than is apparent at first glance. All those pixels that can become so many different things!

It's been really interesting too watch this and see how different we all are.
They were all so good, but these are the ones that I pulled me in:
I really liked Julie's first one, that green & yellow organic looking background was lovely
Zombezi's would be great really huge and hanging on a wall, amazing colors
Snowblind has that oily lit from behind darkness thats just a little scary, yet you can't help but linger
The metallic moody Mifluci and the nervy alive feeling of Astrocruzan caught my eye and then
Stephen Roy and Ososment took it someplace completely out there that I would never have thought of
It's really amazing that this is all the same image, very cool Haint.

I've been looking through many of the examples of manipulation this photo, and I've started to notice this "little person" featuring in some of the pictures. (You can see it in the top-left of the original photo.) This person appears to be ski-ing or riding a bike, so I decided to do the former, as it's a bit more exciting. ;)
![Slalom [Manipulation] (05 Oct 2005)](http://static.flickr.com/32/49685297_9e0f4e894b_m.jpg)
I suppose I've learned from this that you can see a particular picture in one way, then other peoples vision of it can make you see another way entirely. I think it was in cinnamon anemone's "Dialog" picture that I first noticed the "little person". (There's a mirror image of the figure overlaid on top, and they appear to be having a "dialog".) Now I see it all over the place. :)

My faves:
- cinnamon anemone's "Dialog" (As explained above)
- Snowblindfrog's "Tweak #2': This looked almost like an underwater shot of a pond. Very dark and menacing.
- Alice's Furrows' first manipulation. Very nice use of colour, which complements the original lines.
- Wyrd's manipulation. It's almost like a spotlight projected onto on a dark gritted wall.
- Tomusan's second manipulation (The one with the hand). To me the combination of the real hand and the unreal light streaks give this the look of someone literally delving into the unknown.
- BFelice's "Topography". I like the almost "denim" like texture on this one.
- MiFluki's manipulation. I like the degraded-but-not-quite-grainy texture, and the central shape, which is indistict enough to allow for the viewers imagination. It could look like an astronomical event like an exploding galaxy, or a small but fearsome looking insect.
- Tirau Dan's mainpulation. There's a great sense of both space and movement in this one. And the barely-visible face is a nice touch!
- Ososment's manipulation. A very creative combination of the original and portraiture.
All the rest were really good - and very varied- as well, so don't take it as a diss if I haven't mentioned you. :)

MY LIFE AS A HAINT [deleted] says:
Instructions for linking an image:
1. Find the image as it appears within your collaborator’s photostream.
2. Copy the address line associated with the image from your browser to the clipboard (or write the HTML address down).
3. Edit the description box on your post by typing something like “The original image is:" and then paste the address from the clipboard, or type it in from your note.
4. Save your changes and make sure the link is displayed properly.
In addition to the above, here’s how to post an actual example photo into a group discussion, or a photo discussion within a photostream:
1. Open the photo you want to copy.
2. Click on “All Sizes.”
3. Choose “Small.”
4. Scroll down to option 2 in the “To use this photo on other websites” section.
5. Highlight and copy the HTML in the box.
6. Go to the location you want to post the photo (within a group discussion, or a specific photo in someone’s stream).
7. Paste the HTML to the “Add Your Comment” box.
8. Save, and voila! The picture will appear.

i found this group recently and honestly - i didn't read through all those instructions printed in bold (yet), i hope it's fine that i played along, and i hope my submission is welcome.

I inverted the luminance to turn the bright thingies into an object against a bright background.
The background then wasn't bright enough for me so I played with the tone balance and the Light Studio of my editing software.
Then I decided the image was too abstract and I added a silhouette of my wife standing on a mountain... (most of that horizon I added by hand). in order to further increase the feeling of depth I also added a texture of clouds.
I like the interaction between my wife and the abstract thingies.
I'm also pleasantly surprised by many of the others in the thread. some others felt the need to add a source of light - like Tirau Dan, whose fluid silver look I also liked very much.

Here is my first manipulation, done in GIMP.

I started by running the the original from Haint through the "neon" filter (similar to "edge detection"), inverted it, whirled it, and kept tweaking it till I had a nice swirling motion. I then made a seamless tile of the layer.
I duplicated the layer and flipped it so that the swirl would be in reverse.
I created a background layer with a blue to green gradient, and then gave it a whirl.
I set the transparency of the two top layers to about 35% to make everything melt together and give it the illusion of depth. View the original size to get the full effect.
I'm not exactly 100% happy with it, but I want to get started on the other assignments. Total file size was 88MB before exporting to JPG.
