About Marty Knapp's B&W Workshop Network

Members of this group share an interest that was enhanced by their attending one of Marty Knapp’s workshops on Black and White Photography.

Marty has photographed the landscape in Point Reyes, California and the surrounding area for over 20 years. His traditional hand-pulled gelatin silver prints portray the coastal wilderness area in the classic manner of the great American landscape photographers who preceded him. Marty also uses hybrid digital work-flows (scanned negatives) to produce larger prints than are possible in his traditional darkroom.

Photographs can be purchased online at www.martyknapp.com or at his Point Reyes, California gallery. Future classes are also announced on the website. Both film and digital shooters are welcome at the workshops. Digital equipment is used during these events as primary teaching tools and also in support of traditional film techniques.

Group membership is restricted to Workshop participants, although we welcome viewing interest from the Flickr community. Only members may post photos and participate in discussion threads. Non-members may look at the photographs and read the discussions, although the group may, at times, restrict access to certain discussion threads.

The current series of "Seeing the Light" weekend workshops consist of an introduction to Marty’s photographic philosophy and three field photo excursions. Each field session is followed by a digital projection group review in the studio. The focus is on understanding how to identify the right subject for a photograph, how color translates into black and white, and especially on how to find the light that makes a black & white photograph more evocative. The multiple feedback loops are a powerful teaching tool. Marty's flawless guidance through sparkling morning and evening walks, and in the photo critiques, educates while encouraging all and discouraging none.

The smallness of one of the original groups in 2007 and the shared experiences over Friday evening, all day Saturday (including dinner), and Sunday morning led to the formation of this Flickr group. Its aim is to continue the exchange of ideas about photography started during the workshop and to enable each of us to see the progress we are making as we use the knowledge imparted by Marty.

Group members should feel free to post what ever black and white photographs they want to share with the rest of the group. They should not wait until they achieve the perfect museum-quality picture.
