Analisi Microbiologiche del Ferri

The psychiatric asylum of Volterra, in Tuscany, was built in 1888 and officially completed in 1902. Since that date, it has consistently become one of the biggest asylums of Italy, due to the building of specific workshops, new medical sections and a special criminal section.
It progressively grew throughout the 1950 and 1960s’, up to the Basaglia Bill of 1978, that prohibited the use of enclosed asylums of psychiatric needs.
Currently the whole compound of the asylum (made by several buildings scattered in a large park) is in a very bad state of abandonment and decay.
