About MamanImages of the Louise Bourgeois' sculpture of a spider with her eggs, 'Maman', from around the world. Other Bourgeois spider sculptures are also welcome. “The Spider is an ode to my mother. She was my best friend. Like a spider, my mother was a weaver. My family was in the business of tapestry restoration, and my mother was in charge of the workshop. Like spiders, my mother was very clever. Spiders are friendly presences that eat mosquitoes. We know that mosquitoes spread diseases and are therefore unwanted. So, spiders are helpful and protective, just like my Mother" And: ‘My best friend was my mother and she was deliberate, clever, patient, soothing, reasonable, dainty, subtle, indispensable, neat and useful as an araignée [spider]’. Four of the six bronze casts of Maman are on permanent display: Bilbao, Spain, Seoul, Korea, Tokyo, Japan Ottawa, Canada. Two travel the world. We have examples of all in the group.
