Feedback: Cockatoo by guenter

Actually I was not sure if I should upload this shot to flicker but then I did. I was a bit surprised about the positive comments but still for some unknown reason I am not really happy with that photograph. Besides the not perfect sharpness I'd like to know from You, what's wrong with it.

Well, Guenter, I have several options to offer: a) the isolation from the background is not optimum - I think the green distracts and doesn't complement the colors on the bird. b) I'd crop the chest off, it adds not much and I am sure what attracted you to take the shot was the hairdo - so make it more the focal point. c) For reasons I cannot explain, this image works better flipped for me. Here is a quick and dirty edit to demonstrate what I have in mind:

Thanks a lot Dieter!
I did actually think a lot about the crop and the background colouring (in the original shot, there was no green). I'll now try a somewhat more polar contrast with some brown or red, let's see. I think, You found out the main problems (crop, BG)!
As usual, we do not agree with the flipping here ;-) It's funny, isn't it? We seem always to like the other direction ...
Have a nice day my friend,

I tend to agree with Dieter's comments regarding the colors. To me the background is kind of muddy and with the bird being darker, it not only prevents the bird from standing out, I think it causes the birds colors to appear muddier than they are -- a kind of optical illusion.

Completely darkening the BG would not work but Dieter's hint was important for me. That's what I come up with. The picture is OK but not really good so I won't put much more effort into this. But it was again an example that I can learn a lot in this group :-) Thanks!

BTW: I also cropped it a bit tighter at the bottom and enlarged it at the right.

I think the vertical format wasn't working for me in this one. I added some canvas and did a very rough job of cloning in more background. A more interesting background would be nice but extracting the OOF feathers on the top is a job way beyond my photoshop skills. I also brightened the eye and face a bit in increased the saturation just a tad.

How's this for a bit less muddy? These are rough edits, but I think there is still a very lively shot to be had with this one:

Alright, Guenter, here is a suggestion that takes care of the flipping problem:

lol Dieter, maybe I'll try this with a bit of transformation on one to break the symmetry ;-)
Thanks to You all. As I can see, there are a lot of possibilities ;-) Great group, I am not surprised, I already know ...
