About Mainely Stereotypes
Stereotypes are like chain fences - they lock individuals and groups out, they block communication and understanding. Unfortunately, we do have stereotypes in Maine. Signs, place names, products, store displays, advertisements, performances, book cover, articles in our print materials - all of these convey stereotypes to those who see them. We can do something about this! If we see clearly, and share what we see, we can reduce the impact of these stereotypes. Sometimes, we can change what we see.
This group is for classrooms in Maine to share the examples of stereotypes that they find. Native American stereotypes are especially important, but by no means should that limit what is posted. All stereotypes hurt!
Teachers should create classroom accounts. All photographs and other media must be created by students, tagged with (town/city Maine) with the word stereotypeand the type of object (sign, sculpture, "decorative object", display, performance, etc.) and appropriately titled. Descriptions should briefly discuss the positive or negative stereotypes in the media.
Group members must agree with the Rules before they can contribute.
