Since I haven't heard from anngogh, I'm picking the next one, too. Because it depicts one of the more important places in the city, I select Glynnish's "Charlemagne's entrance" for the week of January 3-10.

I have to agree with Holgavision. Great shot, good coloring and very vintage-looking. When I first got to Birmingham I discovered the summer movie series here. Saw Casablanca for the first time at this theater. How appropriate, no?

I appreciate my photo of the Alabama being chosen. I love shooting that sign. The photo I chose for the Best of Magic City 2 is ednoles' "Bogue's", not just because they have great breakfast, but I love that neon sign especially against the late afternoon sky, and how the colors work together.

tmb, I'm flattered. As the weather warms, I am looking forward to getting back out during the evenings. Upcoming full moons are on Feb 13 (possible Valentine's themed meetup on Feb 11?); March 14 (midweek); April 13 (we could photograph, not "shoot" the tax filers at the Post Office on Sat, Apr. 15); and Sat May 13. For those of you into long-range planning, full moon dates through 2010 are at www.moonphases.info/full_moon_calendar_dates.html#Next_Fu...
Next up on my shoot list is the St. Vincent's fountain, which recently underwent repairs.

I love the colors in this pic. The reds and blues with the muted clouds in the back...absolutely wonderful.

Well I had a good tour of the last 52 pages - only 100 left! Some great work here. I'll pass the baton to Maryataub for her Peace Rally:

which just grabs you whether you agree with the demonstrator of not but also check out her UAB Arts and Humanities Building:

and Ikna's Sloss set:
.
I'm so glad to be included in this group and have this opportunity to share some other's work that I admire.
Help! I don't know how to add the image to this page.

With these "all rights reserved" photographers, it's very tricky to add the images. Great picks. We're starting to have too many unappreciated shots in this group. Hopefully our group show will help get some of this work out there (as well as potentially drown us all in a growing pool -- but I have some ideas for that)

I know that this group's sole purpose is not to be a place to help, get help, or commend each other on their photographs, but...a scanned picture that was not taken by the chosen member got Best of the Week?
I'd like it if this group would encourage people to get out there and take pictures of our city. This kind of pushes us in the opposite direction.
Posted 83 months ago.

|

I prefer not having a lot of rules and seeing what happens. The choice of that photo surprised me, and I actually considered asking for another choice, but I decided that I didn't want to shoot down the nomination. I mean, the picture makes people smile!
My original vision of the group (for whatever it's worth) was a place to gather and index as many photos of Birmingham as possible. For Birminghham circa 2005-2006 this has been very successful, but there is a lot of Birmingham which is of very high interest which predates our members' camera work.
For this reason, I have posted quite a number of scanned photos - most of which are in the public domain and a few of which are so remarkable that I couldn't help myself. I will defend the addition of scanned archival material to the Magic City group pool.
That said, I think that the "Best of Magic City" contest is a different animal and I have been very pleased to see some really fantastic photography being honored here this way. I want to do anything I can to encourage people "to get out there and take pictures of our city" (ya'll get out there, y'hear!)
So in combining all these interests, I propose to keep the Langford photo in this thread, to remove it from the "Best of MCFG" pool, and to ask Byron to dive back into the Magic City pool and pick an original photo for us.
Thanks for your input, NWH. Always good to have some discussion flowing....

I dont understand the hang-up with scanned photos. Aren't they photos regardless? Some people prefer the "pure" form of film photography and then choose to digitize them for archiving or sharing.
Case in point, I LOVE the Holga shots. I look forward to shooting with mine, scanning the film in, displaying them here and pray someone nominates them for Best Of.
However, if you didn't shoot the photo and it gets nominated, then please respectfully decline the honor.

I don't think there is any hang up at all with scanning your own prints or negatives. Hell, that's where all our good photos are coming from :)

Yeah, I was not trying to make a stink about scanned photos. Some of mine are scanned. My only concern was when you did not actually take the picture you scanned. As long as you say it isn't yours, then I don't care if they are in the pool at all. I like seeing the old photos in the pool. I agree that they are important in remembering our past.
My only concern was about them being "Best Of's" because I saw this "contest" as a way to honor each other's photography skills and our love for this city. If that is not the purpose, than I was wrong and it is no big deal.
Posted 82 months ago.

Well put. It seems like a good idea at this point to go ahead and formalize the purpose of the "Best of the Magic City" contest: "to honor each other's photography skills and our love for this city."

WOW... what fun. I realized, when stitching the photos of my daughter's cheerleading squad together, how crazy I was to think that I could make a series of photos of daughters and granddaughters (aka moving objects) enjoying their first season as cheerleaders work as a stitched photo. It worked out OK though.
Thanks to Southernpixel for picking it.
After reviewing recent photos in the Magic_City flickr group, I've chosen this one for BestOfMagicCity (beginning 1OCT06) because I've long wanted to head out and document many of these places around Birmingham... and norob112 has done what many of us haven't. He's been there.
