G5 Case Question...
|
Can you display a PowerPC G5 with just the clear plastic deflector door on the case or should the aluminum side panel always be kept on? Thanks

Doesn't make a difference at all... the case isn't a part that the computer needs to run.
However aluminium is a better heat conductor so it will dissipate heat better than the plastic.

Having the side off will not disrupt heat dissipation. The aluminum side panel is not in contact with any components. That being said, I used to run my G5 without the side panel on most of the time. The plastic panel didn't even get warm.

I simply said that aluminum was a better conductor of heat than plastic. I didn't not say whether it would or would not disrupt heat dissipation.
However, since you felt the need to comment on what I said, I'll elaborate.
True, the side panel is not in direct contact with any components. However it is in contact with parts of the case which are. Therefore, some amount of heat would be passed from those parts to the side panel and eventually dissipated. Removing or replacing that panel with plastic requires the hot parts to dissipate all the heat themselves, effectively making those parts hotter.
So with that said, replacing the aluminum panel with plastic would not effect heat dissipation very much, but it would have an effect none the less.
This would be why your plastic panel didn't get very warm, the aluminum surrounding it dissipates heat faster so it wouldn't pass much on to the plastic panel.
I would keep some sort of panel there, plastic or not, just to keep as much dust and dirt out as possible.

What do you mean since I "felt the need" to comment? That was a bit unnecessary.

The plastic is there to channel the airflow and there are heat sensors inside to monitor the temperature. you can run it with the side off but only a limited time without the plastic cowl. There is a knowledgebase article about this somewhere on the Apple support site but I can't find it at the moment.

Wow Mr. Joe Cocker, ain't you just an ass. I think you should change your name from Joe Cocker to Joe the Cock.
Anyway, ckurowic, you are quite correct. Since the aluminum side doesn't even come in contact with any of the components, it shouldn't have any effect on the dissipation of heat at all. I say, the only reason people keep the aluminum side off showcase the innards of their awesome G5s.
