Hehe, I'm in the same boat but at the other end. I've used Mail since OSX arrived, but often wondered whether it's as efficient as Outlook seemed to be back in OS9 days. I have a paid-for version of Entourage hanging about in an Office2004 box, but have never installed it.
Things I like about Mail: it integrates well with Address Book and other Mac apps.
Things I'm not fussed on: it doesn't handle big downloads well (specifically when I get sick of waiting, and cancel to try and do it later: it often gets hung up when cancelling and needs to be Force Quit).

I use Thunderbird, it has plug-ins, extensions, themes, better junk-mail filtering. I just like it more.
Oh yeah, it also has support for PGP, something that I can't find in Apple Mail.

I think there is a plug-in for PGP, but I'm not sure.
I'm currently using Mail, but I'm always tempted to pack it in and use Thunderbird - only the thought of SMTP/pop3 stops me.

I used to be an Entourage user (having switched from Outlook on PC), but I've been using Mail for over a year now and I'm very happy with it. The one thing I do miss is having just one program for address book, tasks, calendar, and mail. I've tried Thunderbird, only natural since I use & love Firefox, but just can't get used to the way Thunderbird handles multiple accounts.

Mail, with Gmail.
I too bought Office 2004 and used Entourage, as I was so used to Outlook when I switched. Then I realised how rubbish it was and quickly switched to Apple's Mail.
I tried Thunderbird for a while, along with Firefox, but they seem a bit over-complicated compared to Safari. I don't need themes or plug-ins! I like things simple.

Apple Mail.
Poor auto-addressbooking, and it hangs shutdown every single time. But it has excellent filtering, and the multiple account management is ace.

I used to use Entourage under OS9 and loved it. Still do. But I could never get used to the OSX version for some reason. I've been using Apple Mail since 2001 and I think it keeps getting better and better.

I use Entourage and I have given "Mail" a try at every major upgrade.
One big reason I have not left Entourage is because "Address Book" is still so simplistic and devoid of features I need. I manage about 1,500 contacts and Address book just does a terrible job and gives me very little control.
I think if Address Book was better, I'd consider using Mail.
Another thing, Mail did not handle "group Emails" that I send to family and friends from time to time in a very efficient manner. This is a necessity for me, maybe most people don't send out family newsletters or things like that and so this does not bother them.
my two cents

Entourage user.
I like the way I can find everything in one program. Email, Calender, notes, to-do. Don't have to have many apps open. And I don't need to backup each pref/data on its own.
I just export the database and it's all in one file.

When I switched in 2003, I gave Apple Mail a go. It'll never be as cool as Gnus + BBDB (in Emacs) is/was, but it did the job well enough that I've never felt compelled to change to other apps like Thunderbird with their non-integrated addressbooks and such (i'm sure Thunderbird's nice enough apart from that, but having switched from Linux i wanted to try and take advantage of the whole "integrated" environment thing). Also, it seemed to have "good enough" support for IMAP accounts (multiple ones, too) at the time, which used to be a hard thing for mail clients to get right. As such, I never spent much time with Entourage either...
I do server-side filtering and spam scanning, so Apple Mail's junk-mail stuff is more a "plan B" for me.
It's certainly worth giving Apple Mail a go. I think Eudora's still around if you're looking for other alternatives. Oh, and Mailsmith (though it only supports POP3, no IMAP!).
(oh, and here's the GnuPG plugin for Apple Mail if that sort of thing floats yer boat.)

Started out with Thunderbird when I made the switch, but have been using Mail fairly consistently ever since. All email from all accounts winds up in my Mail box -- it's pretty good with handling multiple account settings.
My only complaint is its inadequate handling of mass bcc: mail. It seems as though each address needs its own unique Addressbook entry. Talk about inconvenient!

Since I started using OS X, I have been a mail/address/ical user. But more recently, I am retrying entourage essentially for three reasons.
First, entourage utilizes the os x sync services so that my existing ical and address book are sync'd. I still use these applications rather than the entourage for interface reasons and due to their integration with iphoto.
Second, with microsoft update 11.2.3, spotlight now works with entourage, which is good since the entourage search is suboptimal.
Third, project center. The ability to have emails, contacts, calender events, tasks, notes and most importantly files linked to a project was what convinced me. Furthermore, the ability to have emails become tasks has been quite useful. There are some project center replacements and workarounds that have been suggested that integrate mail, ical and address more closely. I have tried these, but I find that entourage still does it better.
Not that entourage doesn't have it's problems. It is not a universal binary. It will not link all file types. The search function is limited. I didn't understand what folks meant about, 'it doesn't have the mac feel' until I started using entourage full time. Still, it provides the best compromise of functionality and is the best solution at this time for my needs to organize work flow.

i recently moved to Apple Mail from Entourage.
however, i use IMAP and Mail's handling of IMAP is downright horrible. i've googled around and it seems that it is a common and well understood limitation of Mail...for many versions now! i wish Apple would get off the pot and fix it, because generally i like the the less-is-more features of Mail vs Entourage (but i may have to switch back if i can't get IMAP working better!).

i regularly switch between mail.app and thunderbird. i rely so heavily on iCal that i just thought entourage would be overkill if i was only needing it for email.
so anyway, i really, really want to use mail.app but it frustrates me with how badly it works with my university's IMAP server (groupwise). i can easily wait for 20 seconds to read a 2 sentence text email. thunderbird opens it right when it appears in my inbox. thunderbird also has a nice feature that i use that allows me to automatically have every email i send also sent (via BCC) to my gmail account. this is a great way to keep track of all my sent mail. when i use mail.app, my sent mail folder gets all screwed up, so i switched to BCCing all sent mail to gmail and having filters there to keep it separate. it's a nice system, but doesn't work without me doing things manually in mail.app.
so, just writing that above is making me think of moving away from mail.app yet again. but, i really want to like mail. doh!

Eudora! I have been using Eudora for several years and it does almost everything I need it to do. I've used Entourage and Mail @ my workplace, but neither one does everything I need a mail app to do. Mail looks beautiful, but it doesn't do everything I need an email app to do.
I would love to switch to Thunderbird, but I have not yet found a way of transferring my mail archives from Eudora to Thunderbird.

I like how nicely mail integrates with everything, including PGP, address book, iChat
I like the GIANT body of aftermarket add-ons for mail and for address book that has allowed address book to not only be as good as, but far surpass Entourage. There are tools to bring all the tools together (address book, iCal, and Mail) and provide all the project management that Entourage adds, but far surpasses it.
My ONLY gripe with Mail is its not greatest performance with IMAP, but I always have it open so it is not that bad.
I LOVED Outlook Express and then Entourage on OS 9 - there was nothing quite as tight, but the Apple solution currently is great, and only gets better with each successive OS update.

Spotlight makes Apple mail unbeatable for me. I would like a better integration with calender and the adres book.
e.g. if I drag a mail to calender it doesn't automatic understands that I woul like to make a meeting with that toppic, and adds the content of the mail to the notes of the meeting

I will admit to having spent quite a bit of time debating this topic with myself. I fess up to having used Entourage since, well, before it was Entourage really. Back in 97/98 when Eudora was really the only POP3 mail client out there for the Mac, I was starting to really accumulate email accounts and I needed something really easy to check multiple POP accounts with, and Eudroa was still a year or two off from offering that feature in any remotely decent implementation (and Eudora still sucks at that as far as I'm concerned). So, I ended up using Outlook Express 4.5 for Macintosh. Off and on I have tried various other clients, including Mail.app for about a year. I worked with the Tiger version for about a year, but recently I switched back to Entourage. Mainly I prefer that the interface is much better layed out. Somteimes abstract is beautiful and functional, but I think in the case of Mail.app some of the functional parts seem too abstract.
I even posted a series of LiveJournal entries discussing my reasons for the switch back, and in the end, Project Center really did it for me.

Well, I had to switch back to Entourage. After dowloading about a million plugins and addons for apple mail, I still could not simply drag and drop a mail for reminders, calendar events or tasks to follow up on.
I hate the junk mail filter on Entourage, but I guess I'll just have to live with it.
Are there Entourage addons that will make the junk mail filter any better?
Thanks for the help..

BTW... Currently using Entourage to grab mail from four different POP accounts including a corporate account, two gmails, and a comcast account.

Well I use both the Mail and Entorage but I prefer Mail due to the intregration it has within the OS. I think that the Office suite for Mac is good but I am like most, I feel that is is not everything it could be.
I read one of the post about that PGP is not supported in Mail but there is a page I will give a link that will help in this department. I used PGP in times past but found that there is a free version of it for the Mac (GNUPG) that is the same code and you can either make a build from the source code or download a currently built installer, your preference...
www.sente.ch/software/GPGMail/English.lproj/GPGMail.html (Mail intergration with GNUPGP might work with PGP too...)

PST files no go....now if you could sort that I WOULD use Entourage all the time - any ideas?
