Well I guess it makes sense. I use both Dreamweaver and Photoshop but i find that I rely on DW less and less. When you're looking at creating dynamic web pages you may use DW to create a template but then everything else is done using other tools. I guess the future is in incorporating DW into the Photoshop world!

I'm not liking this, i think it's just stifling opposition. Where's the competition?

Oh god, Macromedia don't make perfect products, but Photoshop aside, let's hope that Adobe ditch most of their own.

The article is talking about the companies joining together to fight Microsoft, so this might not be a terrible thing and actually a good thing in mac centric thinking.

GoLive CS2 actually looks pretty impressive... a little bogged down with features but hey, at least they are starting to fully implement CSS... at least there version it seems.

Ottoman - You're probably right. I'm guessing that the deal was partially a preemptive strike by Adobe to make sure that Microsoft didn't suck Macromedia into the Homogenous Bloat Vortex™ up in Redmond.

Whatever happened to MacroMind? And I'm still a bit miffed about the acquisition of Aldus by Adobe....
I agree with some that this may help in the battle against Microsoft, but I would rather see more successful companies, not fewer, battling Microsoft. Especially if this even bigger Adobe focuses less on the Mac.

Oh my! I am not a huge fan of Macromedia. I like DW for quick mockups, but I still code by hand with BBEdit (LOVE IT!!!). From a bottom line, it will be good for me because hopefully, I won't have to keep two lines of software up to date, only one.
And I hope they do go after M$ cause the bully can't do graphics to save its life!

Holy crap! Adobe bought Macromedia?! That is seriously big news.
I guess that now every time you hit any Flash for the first time in a browser session, you'll see this splash screen with all the Flash credits and you'll have to wait about 20 seconds while Adobe Flash Reader loads. Haha.

@super hero by night i can't take your posts as seriously or rather I take them as if you are always sad due to your icon.

well, that's life, right? it's always better to assume that i'm sad. and then when I'm happy, it's a pleasant surprise!
it's sort of like if you have really low standards. when you exceed them, it's cause for celebration. whereas if your standards are too high, you're always disappointed.
My point is this: Freehand sucks, and I'll be happy to see it go.

mmm Flash vs SVG, Freehand vs Illustrator, Dreamweaver vs GoLive, ? vs PDF - as a long time user of Adobe stuff and someone who always thought that MM's stuff was never quite up to par (flame suit on), I think this is a great idea. As a friend and i discussed yesterday, this is a sign that the market has closed. There is no room in the game for a direct competitor to photoshop. InDesign has nuked quark, Freehand was properly overtaken by Illustrator years ago, no-one is going to stop using postscript for a long long time, PDF is ubiquitous, and SVG is really cool - and becoming so much cooler than flash.

Beyond the typical "which applications I use are they going to cut" The deal actually is better for both companies. Adobe's web strategy wasn't exactly working. and if you read up, you'll know that they are really making headway into enterprise level software. Macromedia was an obvious choice. DJWhelan is right, this was better then Microsoft buying Macromedia, for sure. But with no other competition than Apple, I hope that Adobe and Apple can play nice. Now if Apple really wants to get into the content creation market, past video and music editing, buying Adobe would be a whole 'nother thing to talk about. Didn't I hear something about Investment Firms saying that all the real financial growth from Apple in the next few years will be in the software department?

Ed, you were right about the "news" on the software. But everyone's known for quite some time that this is where Apple's real strength is in the first place. Sure, they can make good hardware, but it's end-users that drive Apple. As long as they become more Open, then I'm looking forward to this growth that Nostradamus predicted.
As for the Adobe/Macromedia issue itself, there's been a lot of disagreement on what it means all over the place, from Slashdot to Drawn! to here. I'm sure that Adobe fans will end up missing some things, while other Adobe fans may not, and same for fans of Macromedia.
Personally, I dislike Freehand, love Illustrator, love Dreamweaver, love Photoshop AND Fireworks, and of course love Flash. I think Freehand will disappear, which is fine with me, obviously. Illustrator and Photoshop will stay big, but I don't see Dreamweaver going anywhere. I just hope that Fireworks can stay alive, because I prefer winging things with a mix and match of Fireworks, Illustrator, and Photoshop.
Also, I don't see there being huge price jumps.
I like the idea of Apple buying Adobe. That would be incredible.

It's either no more competition or a competitor will emerge. I think the buyout is great. That means filtering out the non-standard applications such as LiveMotion, (but I'm sure LiveMotion's been dead for quite some time), Go Live (is crap), Freehand, Fireworks, etc. I wonder if HomeSite will still be around (even though I'm a Mac guy - still curious).

Spec, I wouldn't worry too much about Flash. It's only if you're a-hankerin' for the other stuff, like Fireworks, that you should really start to fret.
