About Letterscapes

If on one hand an image speaks louder than a thousand words, it's also true that big type shouts any word louder. The power of the written word, when it is rendered as an element of landscape, or even better when exploded in a three-dimensional context, acquires a whole new significance, transcending verbal meaning and physical presence to a new dimension of communication and representation.

The typographical installations featured in this book all represent contemporary interventions on their context. The main criterion for inclusion are the display of the work in public space and its longevity.

The purposes are different; ranging from pure decorative to the informative, to memorials they border signage and landmark design. The creators stem also from a variety of backgrounds: architects, designers, artists, communication specialists.

Letterscapes is a much-needed study on the types, purpose and extent of typographical installations.

Our intention is to collect in this group photographs, sketches and all the material to make it become a publication.
