I love the freshwater beaches of the Great Lakes. Especially along Lake Michigan where they run for miles; often deserted:

Laie Bay on the North Shore of Oahu was wonderful as well:

I'll report on my USVI beach experiences after my trip in April!

Hey Skippy, glad to see you here! I have not had an opportunity to travel much, but here's what I can say about the best beaches I've seen:
1. Jamaica - calm, brilliant, blue water and soft sand

2. Hawaii - absolutely gorgeous beach landscapes, but often rough waters and a nasty undertow, and depending on the beach, teh sand can be a bit too rough. The beaches on Oahu and Maui have softer sand, but the beaches on the big island are much more secluded: true paradise there.

3. Costa Rica - beaches that seem to go on forever into the horizon, but the water is not so clear.
4. Florida - The sand is like a pillow wrapped in silk, and although most of the big ones are crowded, there are a few secluded beaches left down south.
5. California also has some pretty beaches. Here’s Santa Monica:

As soon as I upload pics from Florida and Costa Rica, I’ll add them to the pool.

Best beach for WHAT? Its helpful to try to describe what you are looking for - I do (re-)consider these things, but admit there's probably no "Best Beach" for me. I can, off the top of my head, think of at least FIVE broad characteristics of 'beaches' (none mutually exclusive) that might interest me :
1) Nature : pristine, clean, vistas
2) Solitude: no/few people, privacy
3) Naturalism: camping, nudity, relaxed OR "cruisy"
4) Scene: social, meeting friends, sports, boardwalk entertainment,
5) Convenience: easy access/transport (families), safety/security

Whitehaven is one of the best as people here have mentioned.
For the idyllic Island Beaches, I'd go with Indian Ocean islands Mauritius, Seyschelles or Maldives, easily over their Pacific and Carribbean counterparts.

The beach at Le Morne, Mauritius.

Best Beaches would definitely have to be in the BAHAMAS, we have over 700 Island so you can imagine how many beach and secluded beaches we have to choose from...
The sky is always a clear blue and the waters range from turquoise to a dark blue. The Bahamas archipelagos, are well known for it's breath-taking beaches and actually pink sands on some island. Come visit and judge for yourself lol! Bahamas.com

I've lived in Hawaii, and all over the world near beaches. Not only the ocean, sand, and scenery make it great, but the people who live in these areas. To me New Smyrna Beach Florida tops them all. One man's trash is another man's treasure.

I haven't been to many, Santa Cruz, Half moon bay, atlantic city, the bahamas, Coast of Portugal, Spain, Canary Islands, Cape Cod, Connecticut , Hampton Beach in NH.
This is my favorite Ogonquit Maine. The sand is white powder. The water is shallow but waves are high. They even Surf there. The delta of the Ogonquit River dumps right there. The tide goes out about 1/2 mile. Everyone is welcome there is no building on this stretch of beautiful beach.
