About Lost London
There's a London I'll remember /
all my life /
but now it's gone.
- with apologies to John Lennon
London is not just a city, it is a living entity. And thus, it is ever changing.
New things emerge, old things disappear.
Some changes are more noticeable than others because change sometimes affects even views, places and things of London that were so institutional, iconic, legendary and representative of London, that we simply took for granted - until they disappeared.
Shoreditch tube station, the routemaster buses or the Anything Left-Handed shop in Brewer Street are good examples.
Lost London is about the views of a cherished, beloved or sometimes just common London that now is no more.
The loss does not have to be dramatic in order to qualify for contribution here, it merely has to have become unavailable or unattainable any more.
Examples:
One Canada Water, the main building of Canary Wharf once stood alone, the inner court of the British Museum once housed the books of the Old British Library and there once were fancy blue public phones operated by Mercury and advertised with funny slogans.
And to counterbalance the melancholy and sorrow, there is also a New London group.
