About Lost Neon Treasures (Vintage)
This group is for the lost treasures, the vintage neon signs that have been destroyed or junked instead of saved, restored/reused or donated to a neon museum. Signs doomed due to the short-sightedness of those that don't see the value, beauty and craftsmenship in these steel, glass and neon-gassed pieces of signmaking art, or were lost due to the stupidity of anti-neon sign ordinances in towns and cities.
Please note:
Since this is a very thin topic, the rules are fairly strict. Please read them carefully. If in doubt, feel free to ask one of the administrators or moderators.
What's allowed:
• Photos of vintage signs taken before the sign disappeared, preferably with info about its history and untimely death, so we know that the sign is truly gone.
• Photos of vintage signs being taken down and destroyed. (which will be hard to look at)
• Photos of vintage signs that have been ruined/torn up and are beyond repair or restoration.
Note how we stress vintage signs. That's because the group is only for vintage signs that have been destroyed or otherwise lost forever. By "vintage", we mean signs made before the mid 1970's.
Photographs of vintage signs that have been saved or restored are not allowed, as they don't fit the "lost" concept. In this group, "lost" means gone forever.
Don't panic if you upload something here and don't see it right away. All contributions to the group are "on approval". This means an Admin/Moderator has to look at, then approve your photo for the group before it becomes visable to others. This is done in an effort to help prevent off-topic postings, and keep the group true to it's mission.
For those of us who are really sign freaks, this group will be bittersweet. While we celebrate the greatness of the sign shown, we'll also be feeling sadness over the fact that we'll never see it again. Your photos will help these vanished signs live on, and perhaps interest more people (or an entire generation) in sign preservation.
