About Lookout and Fire Towers of the SoutheastThis group is about the views from lookout towers and the fire lookout towers of the southeast and the eastern US. If possible post photos of the towers itself and the views from the towers with good descriptions as if you were there. Fire towers and lookout towers were used to detect fire in our national parks and national forest beginning in the 1920's and then more in the 1930's when most were built by the CCC camps until the mid 1960's when aerial detection became the most valuable way to detect wildfires. The use of lookout towers continued during high fire risk season here in western North Carolina through the 1990's until modern technology has taken over all but 2 towers that are stilled manned during high risk fire season. The risk of loosing our views from these towers are at risk due to deterioration of the towers themself and lack of funds to maintain them. |
