Forgive my ignorance,
I notice that this is a daytime event, yet it says that it is strobist, is that correct? I am just wondering whether my two nikon speedlights will be up to the job?

@Flannol - I would say they would be if you use them properly - you say in your profile you use 2 speedlights and the sun - they all compliment each other very well. Most of the rest of the group use speedlights at meetups, and even in the summer these have been sufficient to produce decent results. Sign up, come along and see - having been involved with helping (a little) Paulo get this going, I think it is going to be a really good event.

I only have 1 sb600 - but as the pro's always say, its about the ideas and how you use your kit which matters. Well, that's what I'm hoping for anyway!
I have a question about laptops - will there be power outlets as my battery is broken? Will there be a secure place to store them whilst shooting?

@Flannonl and RichardIt will all depend on the assignment guys, dare I say, you don't have to use a flash to get a good picture :)
@Andy, it would be good to be able to store some gear like laptops securely while we are out and about.

Hi folks,
Very excited about the day, and really pleased to see so many people have signed up already. There's lots of info on the blog, as has already been mentioned, and I'd highly recommend reading up on lots of stuff there if you're planning on doing the assignment.
On that subject it's worth remembering that this is not a "strobist" assignment per se, but is supposed to mimic a commercial job. All this means is that using lights may or may not be appropriate - it will depend on what you choose to shoot on the day, and how best that subject/market should be approached. The best response to the brief may be taken in ambient light with no additional lights at all, or it may be the one with 4 flashes on the go. Also, bear in mind that we'll be looking at the paperwork you hand in (to be provided on the day) and marking that as well.
As far as laptop security goes, I'll double check with Calumet, but I'm 99% sure we can store them somewhere for the 3 hours you'll be out and about. Power outlets should be no problem.
Any more queries just let me know.
All the best,
Tom

"in theory" as in, we're not going to hand over any cash, yes!
It's supposed to be as real as possible though, so the fees you charge, and the expenses you bill for should match the picture, and it's eventual usage. Lots more info is on the blog, and I'll stop now at the risk of giving too much of the game away.

Just so you don't think I'm being rude. My friend and I have chickened out; it all seems a little TOO advanced for our young brains to fathom.
Maybe that's a mistake, and jumping in the deep end will do us good, but oh well.
We're off to Palestine the following week anyway with our school (for us: a week of documentary photography! :) - will be quite an experience I'm sure!
Hopefully the next meetup, though! It will be great to finally meet some people with similar interests & to shoot with!

Flannol - why not just come along to the talk? Or do the assignment, but skip the critique? There's no need to do a runner completely.
I understand it may be a bit intimidating, and during the university tour last year we did have a few colleges where there was a large sign up, and then a low turn out on the day, but those places were the ones that learnt the least!

Hey Tom, have read the assignment details on your blog but just wanted to clarify. I have coerced a model to come along to the shoot but wasn't clear about the section re: students.
I understand that we will have one of 5 subjects to choose from but wondered if you could clarify the following "...students, between 5 and 20, will stay behind, and we'll tell you which 5 subjects you can choose from" Does this mean that these student will be available as models on the day or will they also be participating in the exercise?
many thanks and looking forward to Sat.

Kato *we* are the students.
I don't know if we will have room for people to bring models, How do you know that your model will be fitting for the assignments?

Kato,
I personally don't think you should bring a model.
The idea is to shoot to a brief - so its upto you to convince a person or people to let you use them as models after you've read the brief.
Your model may not fit the requirements or even worse you could try to make them fit !
There will plenty of people around to shoot and they have not asked us to bring models. I would not ask for too much clarification - this is a test of your skill set as a photographer. You've read Toms blog - that's what we all have done - so we are all in the same boat !
Some people are a bit nervous - me I'm really looking forward to it.
Just think of it as a challenge .
Good luck -you've covered events in London so I'm pretty sure you'll be fine on the day (just make sure you get plenty of sleep !)

Sorry about the delay folks - was out dancing!
Kato - the term "students" is there because originally (as should be clear from the blog) this was a tour around universities, and was aimed at said students. That particular phrase refers to the fact that during the morning session I would typically be lecturing to 50-100 students, and not all of them would be doing the assignment, just the 5 to 20 that stay behind.
Needless to say, there won't be students on hand to use as subjects!
By all means arrange to meet a model, although I'd suggest telling them to meet you at about midday near Euston, in case we're pressed for space. The catch, as Rams and Paulo have identified, is that the model you arrange may not suit the subject you choose from the 5 available, and you might waste someone's afternoon!
If I were you, I'd spend more time thinking about which market you want to shoot for so that you've got an idea of how much you'd be charging, what the image usage would be and so on.
Good luck, I'll try and respond a bit more promptly next time there are any questions
See you Saturday.

Hey Tom,
I have left it too late to put my book together, any recommendations for the portfolio review? Could we put together a set on flickr and for you and Emma to review as a slideshow?
If we should provide it on disk any recommendations on how to do it?

No Worries,
As long as I can get it onto my laptop, or any laptop for that matter, and it can be ordered fairly easily (I reckon your best bet would be to simply rename all the files 0001 - 0020 or whatever, then I can simply "sort by numeric") you'll be fine.
Above all, as you'll no doubt have read in the series on portfolios I have on the drop down menu on my blog - edit, edit, and edit again. If you think you've only got 5 decent photos, only show 5 decent photos - people will remember you for the crap ones!
See you soon

Hey Guys,
Hope everyone had a good time yesterday, I'll be posting the report card on the roadshow blog very soon, so you can see how you all did!
Emma, Dave and I had a great time thanks, you're such a supportive group you put many colleges to shame, and some of the stuff we saw in people's portfolios was truly superb.
Very glad Paulo kept his clothes on, plus we won the rugby - hurrah!
Might be tempted to do another one later in the year, possibly around the time the lecture tour (if there is one) starts.
All the best,

Agreed, I finally broke through that barrier, the worst they can say is no!
It has all been said already, but i will say again that the workshop was truly great. Tom and Emma were fantastic (and really nice people) and the assignment provided invaluable exposure to the demands of the "real" world. The subsequent feedback on the work we handed in and the portfolio reviews were priceless.
Thanks again, guys, I actually find that I have direction on what I need to do moving forward.
