The Sagatiba guerrilla marketing campaign

Some of you may recall seeing that documentary on Saatchi & Saatchi, where they were pitching for a campaign to introduce a new brand of Brazilian cachaça (liquor) to the UK. The pitch that ultimately won out was to evoke the look of that giant Jesus statue in Rio as the central image of the campaign.

Well lo and behold it seems the campaign has begun in earnest. I haven't caught a print ad yet but it appears the pre-print guerrilla phase of the campaign involves stenciling images of the Jesus Guy all over every surface in London.

Well, as far as I can tell, the first person to Flickr this image is our very own Grass, who uploaded this image today.

Without shilling for Sagatiba too much in what is after all a cynical marketing appropriation of "street cred", I have taken the liberty of adding a "sagatiba" tag to the image, and will be keeping my eye out for other appearances of this stencil on Flickr.

If you have any shots of this to contribute, please do the same. I'd be interested in seeing how long it takes before this becomes a meme.

Thanks, ponyintheair. I took the liberty of tagging it for you.

You can see all the current Sagatiba ones (that I know of, anyway) here:

Hi everybody this is my first post in this group. Five more sagatibas here. In a sort of related topic does anybody know who is the artist behind these guerrila images of screaming pixelated children over billboards? thanks.

And another one down at the south end of Brick Lane (or Osborn Street or whatever it is by then)

Dunno, I could be wrong, but isn't this the 'Turnin Shroud' of the stencil?

Same photo is also up at www.elmundo.es/elmundo/2005/05/23/comunicacion/1116848237...

Both sites asked me permission.

Looks like Saatchi have started hitting people to get them to write copy...
