Hello. As I live in the south east and live near Margate, this sounds very good.
I already do alot of flickr meets in the south east, check my group out.
www.flickr.com/groups/east-kent/
By the way, I know alot of people who live in Margate who wouldnt really say it was crap, I would write what they said but its too offensive. LOL

I've done Margate and most of the rest of the Kent coast before, but could be tempted by a return visit if I'm free that day.
I'll mention it to some of the Kent based people I know in case they fancy tagging along
Steve (who recently went to Magaluf because I rather like seaside grot out of season)
P.S. Kent's answer to Jaywick is undoubtedly Leysdown.

Blimey, I didn't expect there to be so many people that actually want to go to crap places ;)
So welcome to all, and just to clarify, these little outings don't have itineraries [other than which train(s) we're intending to catch, or where we're meeting to start there].
Other than that, it's up to you. Leslie is out nominal leader and the person to blame for this series of visits...You'll more often find her on the LPMG forum, it's all her perverse idea!
Nivek, Steve any more suggestions for really awful seaside places to visit?
I fancy Yarmouth next... ;)

Awwwwwwwwwwwww I love Margate, I know it is run down and no longer its best but I still love the sandy beach, the restaurant on the front and the fresh donuts it sells. Primark right opposite is great if you forget spare clothes or beach towel..........think part of me is hurt by it being called crap lololol I go several times a year with my kids taking beach games and small tent as a wind break....love it, I never feel complete if I haven't done Margate during a half-term break. I can't make Saturday meets at the moment due to college.so shall have to take myself off on a different day ;o)

I just fell down the rabbit hole at the English Heritage site and found this interesting photo essay of Edwardian seaside towns:

There's a couple of shots of Margate.

I'd agree with mondo about Broadstairs, which could probably be combined with Ramsgate in a day.
Dover's a pretty grim place, but does have a castle and South Foreland.
Folkestone has a cheap hotel (handy for Romney Marsh) and no other redeeming factors.
Yarmouth's a bit far for a day trip. I did it in a weekend and stopped very cheaply at Fawlty Towers!
Cromer and Skegness also spring to mind. But both are an even longer haul.
Closer to home there's Bognor or Eastbourne.
I'll have a root back through my stream to see where else springs to mind
Steve
(grins ducks and runs in case he's offended residents of any of the above places
and wanders off to think about doing New Brighton)

For all it's 'old fogie' image, Eastbourne's not too bad either. Certainly far to well maintained for this!
I like Brighton too, it's not at all crap, and the Flickr crew there are good bunch too!
(Yarmouth, incidentaly, is a 2 1/2 journey with a change at Norwich, - might want to do Norwich one day, then Yarmouth the next if anyone interested in the summer)

@CDL: I've never been to Ramsgate; we caught a fairly quick bus from Margate to Broadstairs when we went, and then got the train back from there.
by the way, have you lot seen the Seaside Town they forgot to close down? There's a whole thread about weird seaside towns there.
Right, I'm off to put all my seaside pics into a set.

Rye is easily accessible from London and IMO perfectly fits this category of seaside towns.

Apart from Rye is :
1) Actually rather nice and
2) Not at all run down or shabby.
It *is* worth a visit though, if you haven't been already. And it has several rather nice pubs, too.

I *have* been there and that's why I suggested it in this thread. ;) Which is not to say I'd ever want to go there again. I agree it is not shabby, but the original word in the title of this thread was not "shabby" but something different...
