The people at Bletchley Park have been appearing all over the internets recently and kicked my brain into remembering that I still haven't visited. So, I'm going to go along sometime and was wondering if any of you lot want to come and play as well.

They describe themselves as the "Historic site of secret British codebreaking activities during WWII and birthplace of the modern computer" and like people running around and taking photos, especially as they are currently under threat due to a lack of funding.

We're going for Saturday March 21st - there's a chance that some pieces of the site won't be open, as they have conferences and functions on Saturdays sometimes, but the main bits will be and the National Museum of Computing is only open on Thursdays and Saturdays.

It costs £10 to get in (or £8.50 if we book in advance on the website), and a ticket gets you admission any time for the next year. Getting there takes about 35-50 minutes from Euston (and should cost £12-18 - the lower if we buy tickets as a group using Gold cards). They're open from 10:30 til 4, so I think we should get the 11:13 from Euston to Bletchley. Meet at Euston (outside WH Smiths) at 11 if you want to come on that train with us - it's the short 36 minute ride that will get us in at 11:49.

Anyways, is anyone interested? Depending on numbers we might want to book as a group, so please let me know if you want to come so we can get an idea of how many people we might have.

Both Bletchley Park and The National Museum of Computing have flickr groups if you need more convincing.

On upcoming

There is also a gig in the evening - Pixelh8 will be performing "Obsolete?" followed by a wander around the Museum of Computing. You do need to book it seperately though if you want to go - details are on Pixelh8's site.

me! me! me!

i bought a yearly ticket a few months ago, and have been procrastinating on this.

I approve of this idea and would like to subscribe to your newsletter.
nuttyxander 10 years ago
I've always meant to go (my maternal grandmother worked there during the war), and if the individual ticket means you can go back in twelve months then this is effectively a free extra visit with more photography... so yes.

I am going on the 21st of March in the evening to see (and hear) Pixelh8 play music on old computers.

If anyone else is going please let me know, otherwise I'll be hanging around in the cold on my for a couple of hours. Actually, I'm sure Bletchley has pubs...

Great idea, put us (2.5) down.

@Bletchley Park Trust
Hi, do you know if photography will be allowed at the gig (obviously would not use flash)?
Also, is it allowed in the museum?
Ta.

If I'm not working, yes please!
Interested in going..... not sure if I will be free on the proposed date yet

I'd be interested if I'm free that day.

I am interested but my availability is dependant on my convalescence from surgery I underwent in December. I should have a clearer idea after seeing the consultants involved next week and early in March.
Bletchley Park Trust 10 years ago
@ boncey - no restrictions on photography - in museum or grounds. And really happy if you share with the group here www.flickr.com/groups/bletchleypark/ :-)
CdL Creative 10 years ago
@ Bletchley Park Trust

I've been to simliar events before where the venue has not imposed any restrictions but the band (or private security claiming to act for them) have.

Can you confirm the situation with regard to the gig. Because saying that there are no restrictions "in the grounds" isn't quite the same thing.

I had a less than pleasant experience with goons employed by the Alabamha 3. So can you clarify please.

Steve

Ah, I see. You are refferring to the gig in the evening. Let me clarify and get back to you.
Kevin Murrell 10 years ago
Hi all. I am one of the trustees at The National Museum of Computing. We can't allow flash photography during the performance itself - can't have the artist being put off! Afterwards of course, you are welcome to take lots of photos - not for commercial use of course!!

We will escort as many people as want to the museum after the concert - just a few minutes walk - and let them have the run of the museum. Again you are free to take lots of pics - again for non commercial use. We plan to have lots of guides present, and as many machines as possible switched on. See you there.
Kevin Murrell 10 years ago
BTW The museum has it's own flickr group where we would love your photographs - it's at www.flickr.com/groups/tnmoc/
:) yeah probably best no pictures during the performance but there is a Q & A session after the performance and I am quite happy for you to take pictures then. It should be an amazing couple of nights :) thanks for all your support.

Thanks for clarifying on photos.
I don't know why I asked about the gig in fact - I'll probably be bringing this camera...

Oh dear it clashes with LPMG workshop
@boncey if you want to take photos of me or the equipment just ask I will wandering around during the tour as well pointing out my favourite machines. There are also so many cool tiny little things too, hope there are some macro lense people out there too :)

Like Charles, I'll be on the LPMG workshop. And a bit gutted to miss pixelh8 :(

Bletchley is great to wander round, give youself plenty of time and make sure you make the pilgrimage to the Colossus replica and chat to Tony Sale, who's a very nice man indeed and a mine of information.
I loved it...and I expect to see some very cool photos from you lot!
stevebell 10 years ago
I shall certainly be going, will be driving over as I'm only 30 minutes away. Like many, I had been meaning to visit Bletchley Park for a long time, and finally did near the end of last year, and again at the end of January, and I still haven't seen everything. It's very camera friendly, and even if you can't make this meet, it's well worth visiting at another time.
wwarby 10 years ago
I'd like to come along to this one too :)
VanishingPoints 10 years ago
This sounds good to me, as it's not far away from me anyway. I might well be up for the gig too. And the offer of being let loose in the museum is too good to miss! Count me in.
admin
cowfish 10 years ago
@Markro if you want to go to the gig you'll need to book a ticket asap - there aren't very many and they're almost gone.
VanishingPoints 10 years ago
@cowfish. Ticket booked :) Thanks for the tip...

And, as Boncey kindly pointed out to me in the pub the other week, Pixel8h are also playing on the Friday night (20th).

Which I can't do, either.

It's not fair...

Top post updated - I reckon we should get the 11:13 train from Euston that gets us to Bletchley at 11:49.

If anyone wants to get a different train let me know so that we can meet up at Bletchley.
wwarby 10 years ago
@cowfish: Could we also have a meeting point at the place itself, as I'm probably going to drive (doesn't make much sense to come into London just to go straight back out again)
admin
cowfish 10 years ago
@wwarby I'll sort out a meeting place closer to the time - the folks at Bletchley are looking into maybe sorting us out a guide, so when we know what's going on with that I'll sort out somewhere to meet up.

It'll probably be in the cafe at some time between 12 and 12:15 - I don't know how much of a walk there is from the station.

I met Kevin Murrell today (showing again how tiny the world really is) and I've heard a bit more about what's going on at Bletchley on the 21st.

Due to Pixelh8's gig being on at TNMOC the museum will be staying open later than usual, so if people want to stay around and take photos for a bit longer we should be able to. There was also talk of a bar opening at 6:30 before the gig.

Kevin was saying that they should be able to open up glass cases and some of the machines for us to take photos. Which is rather cool.

When we get a bit closer to the 21st I'll have some more details about any special arrangements. In the meantime please sign up on the upcoming page to let us know if you are definitely coming so we can get a good idea of numbers. If you're not on upcoming please let me know on here.
I'm now booked on an animal "safari" expedition on 21st with one of my daughters :-( so cannot make this trip. Sad, nothing much of note for weeks on end, then 2 events on the same day that I'd have liked to have attended
Pixelh8 (Official Flickr Page) Posted 10 years ago. Edited by Pixelh8 (Official Flickr Page) (member) 10 years ago
Ok also, I have arranged for photgraphers to have access to my soundcheck between 6-630pm on both nights as that way you can set up the shots you want and use flash if needed, as you won't be able to use flash during the performance. You won't hear any music though during the soundcheck as I don't want to spoil it for anyone, however you will get to see and photo the visuals :)

Tickets are however almost sold out so be quick!!!

Tickets are available from both
www.pixelh8.co.uk & www.tnmoc.org
March 20th & 21st, 2009
Photographers 6-630pm
Doors open 7.15pm
Performance starts at 7.30pm prompt

:)

Hope you are all well. Please come up and introduce yourself.

Dayum. When I booked a ticket I'm sure the web page said it would be sent to me, but it's still not arrived. I've just had a look at both email accounts and I can't find any confirmation there either even though I know I got a confirmation email 'cos I'd never have said I had a ticket if I hadn't. Argh. Now what?
VanishingPoints 10 years ago
@mondoagogo - my receipt came from 'etickets.to' and I also had a receipt from PayPal. That's the only mail I got - the former has a code number in it which I assume is the ticket. Maybe that address will help you find it in your mail somewhere?
SSL 4000G+ 10 years ago
mondoagogo - bring proof of debit from Paypal or bank or whatever; tweet me @panavision and i will give you my cell phone then call when you arrive; i will then sort it out for you...
niknkimnollienelise 10 years ago
we will probably be driving as well, what's the B Park rendezvous?
admin
cowfish 10 years ago
If SSL 4000G+ doesn't have any better suggestions on where to meet, I'd say in the cafe sometime between 12 and 12:30.

Fire me over a mail to let me know if you'll be meeting us at the station so that we either don't go without you, or at least know we are going without you...

11 in front of WHSmith ready to get the 11:13 train - get your ticket before you meet the group.
SSL 4000G+ 10 years ago
cafe (Hut 4) @ 12-12:30 is fine except mondoagogo doesn't have her ticket confirmation - so u can get her to SMS me & I will sort @ Admissions - cowfish has my cell phone via @panavision on Twitter -don't forget the @Pixelh8 gig in the evening there as well...

in fact anyone else with any probs can call or SMS me tommorow & I will sort if cowfish can liaise...

Apparently I am a bigger idiot than everyone thought, as I forgot that in fact I have three email addresses, not two. I now have my code and hope that will gain me entry because I'm not going to be near a printer between now and then!

I'm not sure what the plan is between BP closing at 4pm and the gig soundcheck. Is there a pub or something similar we can adjourn to?
SSL 4000G+ 10 years ago
mondoagogo if you get any probs @ admissions get them to radio me (Philip) & I come down to sort it out... yes there are a number of pubs close by or a 10 min bus to Milton Keynes Central...
