Oxford - January 31st

view profile

Paolo G  Pro User  says:

As requested we have a trip out to Oxford for the London Flickr Meetup group and those nice people at the Oxford Flickr Group have offered to show us around the city and make sure we get to a good watering hole.

We will meetup with the Oxford group at Gloucester Green (near where the Oxford Tube route ends) at 11am where we will start our photowalk. Some people are catching the Oxford Tube coach service from London because of the problems that will be caused by works on the trainline that day.

Please keep an eye on this message at the top as it will be updated.

You can drive, but beware that our city isn't the most car friendly place. You will have to use Park and Ride to maintain your sanity (and to avoid getting lost in our one way system). Not being a driver I don't know how busy the car parks get but the buses are very frequent.

I think the Oxford Tube is the most convenient way to get there. It does take a bit longer than the train but not really that much, and you save the time on walking from the station to the centre of town, anyway. Plus, it runs all night so no worries about ever missing the last train!

Just posted this on the out-of-London thread, thought I'd better post here too:

Re cmartin's etc's comment [on the Out Of london thread] there are engineering works on the line between Reading and Oxford on 31 January, so trains from Paddington will involve a change at Didcot (and don't even think of going via Basingstoke).

Most sensible option getting there from London would therefore be either of the two bus services Garrettc mentioned above, which you can pick up from Grosvenor Gardens plus various other locations on their way west out of London.

Rija 2.0  Pro User  says:

I'll take the Oxford Tube as they've got a pick up point (Shepherds Bush) not far from my place.

If the meeting point in Oxford is 11am at the railway station, I think I'll get in the 0805 bus. They say duration is about 100mn, let's say 120mn.

The closest Tube stop to the railway station is the last stop, Gloucester Green. After that it looks like there's a 20mn-30mn walk to the railway station.

That should get me to the railway station between 10h30 and 11am.

Will know nearer the time whether I can make it. The Oxford Tube looks like the most sensible method, and as several people plan to take it, maybe have a second meeting point in a more central location? Sure enough, the website is now showing a bus replacement service from Reading to Oxford, rather than a train. Sigh, it's like the start of 2008 where nearly every weekend train journey I took involved the use of replacement buses and hugely increased journey times

If lots of people are going by coach would it be better to have a second meeting point in the centre, like you did for Cambridge.

Say 11am at the station and 11.30 at the coach stop in the High Street?

Oxford Tube runs from Victoria, stops at Marble Arch and Shepherds Bush, Oxford Espress runs from Victoria, stops at Marble Arch and Baker Street and is a more ethical company... If I'm not working, am almost definitely coming to this, be good to catch some of the Oxford group...
and yes, Oxford is a city of many and various interesting watering holes, fear not!

Capo2  Pro User  says:

Re CDL's comment above I think a more central meeting point is a good idea, but wouldn't recommend the coach stop on the High St, it's a bit of a trek for those coming from the train station.

I'd suggest meeting at the AMT coffee stall at the top of Cornmarket, next to St Michael At The Northgate church.

There's a picture of it here:

www.smng.org.uk/

For those coming by train, it's a 10-ish minute walk from the station, come out of the station forecourt, turn left, Said Business School will be on your left hand side, keep walking straight ahead, turn right when you get to Waterstone's, the church is 50 yards down on the left.

For those coming by coach, I'd get off on the High St, keep walking in the same direction the coach was going, when you get the junction with Abbey on one corner and Lloyds TSB on the other, turn right and the church is about 300 yards on your right.

Unfortunately I'll be working up in London that afternoon but I'm sure the Oxford group will make you all very welcome.

Oxford Tube looks like a good option for me.

A quick search
09:05 London - near Victoria tube (Buckingham Palace Road at Grosvenor Gdns)

*** Depending where we meetup (rough times)
10:40 Oxford High street
10:48 Oxford AMT coffee stall at the top of Cornmarket, next to St Michael At The Northgate church, OX1 3EY. (+8mins)

10:44 Oxford St Aldate's
10:48 Oxford AMT coffee stall at the top of Cornmarket, next to St Michael At The Northgate church, OX1 3EY. (+4mins)

10:45 Oxford Gloucester Green
10:52 Oxford Railway station (+7mins)

Any idea what time we will be staying to? Sunset is around 16:50 I'm thinking about tripod :)
Coming back to London does not look like a problem with Oxford tube, every 10-15mins upto 19:50 (from Gloucester Green) Every 20 mins until 01:10 (than every 60 mins)

Hi folks, apologies for the recent silence but I've only just got back from my Xmas hols (2 weeks without the internet, bliss!). As it seems that most of you are now coming by coach I think Gloucester Green makes perfect sense as a meeting place. It's next to the coach station (where all the coach services end up anyway) and as mentioned by red betty black it's only a few minutes walk from the railway station.

I'll get together a Google map with suitable waypoints on it for everyone later on this evening.
