Something that might slot in with the sitting down for a coffee in central london idea is glyn1's request for a wander around Soho - there's lots of stuff to take photos of as well as lots of places to drink coffee/tea/beer/petrol/etc.
Any other ideas? Interesting events in feb?

I'd personally prefer a "wander" to an "event".
Events means you're all stuck in one place and after a while the photo ops dry up.
Wandering means the scenery changes, and you can keep on clicking.
I also like the idea of stopping for coffee, as long as we also stop for beer at the end.

Oui. We could agree on several pit stops, and then people could wander around in smaller groups between them?
12.00 cafe a for coffee
14.00 restaurant b for lunch
17.00 pub c for beers
Boncey: We were just yesterday wondering why these meetups have been focused on drinks rather than photography lately...

I think the focus on drinks rather than walking around is purely down to the cold weather.
But enough of that I say, let's see what is going on "outside".
Soho and/or Chinatown would both be high on my wander list. So much to see.

Chinese New Year sounds fantastic, and I haven't explored Soho at all yet, so that also sounds very enticing.
Re: guided walks, it seems like they also do private walks, so maybe if enough people are interested, we could plan a walk to ourselves to take in photo opps at the same time?

I like the idea of the private walks, if there is enough of us, as I know that there are lots of cool places/sights off the beaten track which I wouldn't find otherwise.
I can't make the 19th Feb though ... off mountain biking in deepest darkest wales. Hopefully this idea will be repeated later in the year!
Looking forward to meeting everyone tonight.

I though I'd summarise:
Soho - 19th of Feb
Chinese New Year Soho - 29th Jan
A Sunday guided walk www.walks.com/Homepage/Sunday/default.aspx
Schweppes Portrait awards at the NPG
on till 12 February 2006
www.npg.org.uk/live/schweppes.asp
Personally: yes to all of the above - though I agree we could annoy other guided walkers. Have fun tonight, shame I can't make it (& and a hello and welcome to Minim).

the chinese new year looks great (although if i've missed you lot in the hall of the nhm, the odds of losing you in the soho are much bigger).
as for the walk, yesterday i bought a little red book called "city secrets - london" which has lots of places to go to and see/shoot/drink at; and it seems quite more interesting than the usual timeout london walks, for instance, so i can write a proposal for a walk and we'll set a date then?

I saw Joanna in the NHM yesterday - talking to one of our group - she walked off before I could say hi.
Walk proposals would be good.
I'm really keen on the idea of walking from one place to another; rather than hanging around one spot.

How about going for dim sum for the Chinese New Year thing? Golden Dragon on Gerrard Street is good for big groups, and the food is good in there, too....
I'm so gutted that the King's Head/Dive Bar has been knocked down, it would have the been the perfect place to meet. There's always the Polar Bear, but it has a non-smoking policy which might bother some people. I suppose we don't have to meet in a pub, but I was just thinking about a way to congregate somewhere that's easy to find and doesn't clog up an already crowded street, not to mention somewhere warm!
pfig has a point about losing people, though -- if I hadn't already met Squirmelia and cowfish, I'd probably never have guessed which group was this one from all the groups in the NHM (lovely to meet everyone, btw -- I'll try to post photos later). Anyway, I have what might be a solution to that problem, which is to make a thread just for people to post photos of themselves, all in one place, since not everyone's icon has their face on, and not everyone has time to click through every single photostream, on the chance that there's a discernable picture in there.... Does that make sense?
Apologies if I'm rambling; it's the low blood sugar again.

Annoyingly my Hong Kong based friend who used to organise our dim-sum fest for new year has disappeared back off to Hong Kong...but we've gone to the Jade Garden on Wardour Street in the past. You need to get people standing in the queue outside (as you probably will for most of the restaurants, a lot of them don't seem to take bookings that weekend and do all the tables by queuing). The Jade Garden's good for that as the Lisle Street Hogshead is over the road. I've not tried Golden Dragon nut as mondoagogo says the Polar Bear is just round the corner, as is De Hems, which makes it eminently suitable.
As for piccies of people, if people post group pics to the pool I'll link them from the front page and then you lot can add notes to your faces if you want to be known...drop me a mail if you post one that you think will be suitable.
Would a self portrait thread be a good idea, or would that be scary? I know my only selfy in my stream is...

Glyn1, a second meetup point is a grand plan. I've got some work to do before I come along in the morning which is somewhat reliant on someone in America getting up at 5am to complete, so it would be great to know that if I miss the 11am gathering, there's another one for the fireworks.

NB the Battersea Beer Festival started today:

If you're going, find your way to the "Cider and Perry Bar" and try a perry, which is a cider made from pears. And if you see a bearded hobbit named Simon working behind that particular bar,

I think i stayed til about 5:30 then had to go as would have got too drunk and the light had gone by then. All told it was pretty good for series of firsts for me: first practical Meet and discovering bits of islington i'd never bothered to look at before, first 35mm film use in flippin' ages (olympus trip - lent by Stef), first endevour to do a set of pics for a tale of two cities, although given the grey day and the drizzle i'm not too confident about the results and may shoot more film over the coming week.
