Hah, I was thinking of doing something like this year, too. Maybe we could do a "photo off" where we take the same borough the same time? I dunno if that would work with time logistics, though.
Good ways of I've found interesting places to photograph in London are 1) delving into offbeat books on London and 2) playing Guess Where London, 3.) browsing some of the less obvious London-based groups on Flickr.

priono The City of London isn't actually a borough! So it's 33 including the City, but 32 actual boroughs.
mondoagogo I think it would be interesting. Set a few of us off, meet back later at a convenient place and see what different views we took of the borough, though as you say would probably be a logistical nightmare. Perhaps a fortnightly thread, so people have time to travel out/in?
Homemade Thanks for the tip, I'll pop by when I get started on Croydon!

Why didn't I think of doing that in the first place?! Good idea, will do that for each borough. Now to decide on an order!

Great idea!
In Wandsworth there is the Ram Brewery, now closed, which was London's oldest brewer.
Or in Battersea there is the park with the peace pagoda.
Good luck!

There is always the London Flickr Meetups Group if you want to organise things like that, but even so logistically there are time issues.
I was just thinking that we could pick, say, three specific boroughs per month and then the challenge would be to shoot those before the end of the month. That way we're not restricted to necessarily having to make dates that we might not be able to. Maybe in alphabetical order, to make things a bit easier?

That sounds great. Running Feb-December with 3 a month would be all 32 plus the City is a perfect fit.
Now, who's in?

Lewisham is a great borough for nice pics. Forest Hill (my home town) is full of interesting buildings. I guess our local landmark would be the stunning Horniman Museum. Plus Canonbie rd has to have the best view of London of any borough. On a clear day you get a fantastic view of Westminster right across to Docklands and the O2. It's worth a visit ,trust me.

It's February now - is anyone still up for this?
Maybe we could set up a group. I like Mondo's 3-a-month idea, but not sure about alphabetically. I wonder if geographical would be better - that way it could be arranged that people can get 2 or 3 boroughs in a single outing if they are pushed for time.

Geographical could work as well. As would (argh yet another!) group. I am still planning to do it. I haven't decided where to start yet, probably my own (Camden).

The other possibility could be a monthly thread in this group, I guess.
As a starting idea, what about something like:
February - Camden, Haringey, Enfield
March - Islington, Hackney, Waltham Forest
April - Tower Hamlets, Newham, Redbridge
May - City, Barking, Havering
June - Greenwich, Bexley, Bromley
July - Southwark, Lewisham, Croydon
August - Lambeth, Merton, Sutton
September - Wandsworth, Kingston, Richmond
October - Hammersmith, Hounslow, Hillingdon
November - Kensington and Chelsea, Ealing, Harrow
December - Westminster, Brent, Barnet.
map
I thought that if each month there was one relatively accesible (i.e. central) borough, and two neighbouring outer boroughs, it might be a bit easier than, say, doing Barking, Bexley and Barnet in one month.

I'm happy to go with Yersinia's list, unless anyone has any better suggestions, but it is now Feb so as it's the only list I think we should probably stick with it!
Thread or group? I think a group may work better, or threads in here may get lost. Either way, I'm easy.
Camden, Haringey and Enfield it is. Camden's easy - it's my own.

This sounds like the way forward. Unfortunately I'll be working every single day until the end of Feb, so I suspect that there will be a lot of of 'London by Night' photos.

Yersinia's list should be okay for me, too. I think separate threads in this pool should be okay, too, unless Trenchfoot strenuously objects.
edit to say: I'm counting the City of London as a borough for the project, so that'll be 33 photos from my end.

OK, I'll assume that at least the February list is set, and prepare a thread this evening. We can squabble about later months' order if anyone has any reasons for wanting to swap 'em around a bit.

Coming by late. (But it's strange, I was already thinking of doing this this year.) I see your schedule has covered my home areas anyway, though. So what's going on with Barking and Havering (I've never set foot in Havering, let alone taken a pic there).
Redbridge, by the way, has the very fine City of London Cemetery, a terrific Sikh temple and, best of all, a fantastic set of North Circular flyovers and old railway sheds in Ilford. And that's just the tiny bit of the borough I've seen.

Hi Fin - I've got slightly behind schedule due to colds, family birthdays and holidays - I was supposed to do Redbridge and Newham last month, and was going to do a day in the City of London Cemetery (which I think is actually just on the Newham side of the borough boundary), and Wanstead Flats in Redbridge. Also wondering about Gants Hill Tube Station. I will try to squeeze them in this month instead.
I haven't really got a plan for Barking and Havering, and am away for the next two weekends, but maybe we can arrange a flickr expotition for the weekend of the 24th?
Any East Londoners got any good ideas for those boroughs?

Sign me on for that on the 24th. Those are honking big boroughs, though, I'd say start with Barking and see where it goes. Will do some checking. I had some ideas where to go next in Barking/Dagenham, but hadn't got round to Havering.
Hot tip on Wanstead. Wanstead Flats is like, flat and not a little dull. What you want is Wanstead Park, ex-estate grounds, much more interesting:

[Haven't been there for years, hoping to revisit soon.]
Hmm, I'm sure I've been through this bit with the cemetery when I posted some shots, was sure it was in Redbridge. Will double check...
[No one's ever done a song about our lovely A10 up here, shame. Should be Pink Floydish really, it being the road to Cambridge and that.]

Reports of lesser spotted woodpecker in the park, which is near the top of MM's birding 'want list'.

With respect to B&D, my agenda was to head for the Thames Gateway redevelopment area (Dagenham, basically) to check out vestiges of industry etc before the area is swept clean. But there are plenty of other places, like Barking Abbey, I'm sure.

We get great spotted and green, and London Wildweb reckons there are lessers in our local park, but I've never seen them.
We thought we heard them in Tower Hamlets Cemetery, which would fit with your East London observation.
I don't have good ideas for Barking and Havering yet. It doesn't help that Havering is off my London map.
Still, a very appropriate pair of gerunds for me in those two boroughs.

I'm not much of a twitcher, another walker identified one for me, and I've seen the same mark of bird once since. The corpse was easier to ID, of course.
[Perhaps we should ask the local groups for recommendations on those Boroughs. I have another agenda now in the form of Grade I buildings. But I'm not sure how thrilling these are, and Havering's are very widely spread. Seems to me that borough is more like a collection of individual towns, it may be hard to sum up...
Barking & Dagenham
Church of St Margaret, Broadway, Barking
Eastbury Manor House, Eastbury Sq, Barking (NT) - R
Eastbury Manor House: garden walls (NT) - R
Havering
Church of St Andrew, High St, Hornchurch
Church of St Helen & St Giles, Broadway, Rainham
The Bower House, Orange Tree Hill, Romford
The Bower House: Stable Block
Church of St Mary Magdalene, Church Ln, Upminster
Church of St Laurence, St Marys Ln, Upminster

Hmm. Eastbury Manor House is only open Mondays, Tuesdays and the first two Saturdays of each month.
Good idea to ask the Borough groups, and if we want to organise a trip for 24th, could be worth pinging the LFMG, too.

Well, G1 buildings are frequently not the most interesting ones anyway. Seems to me that if both boroughs have to be included in one go, that constrains it to a strip along the border, though that could be quite wide. Haven't got an OS map for east of the Lee though, that would help...

They don't have to be both in the same day, though it makes it more do-able if they can be.
Could also use public transport to get between them, though that obviously limits it to places near usable routes.
I do have the E London Landranger. Could scan in the appropriate portion...

Oh, that's real clear then, just needed a borough boundary. I would say you start in Romford, the station surrounded by double carriageways (lovely) and head for Dagenham Town Centre. For them as likes that kind of thing, there's green stuff on the way, and a further extension to Becontree takes in a gallery/museum.

I've pretty much ended up doing all the boroughs out of order, so far, but I figure it's just a framework rather than set in stone, right?
Have set up a specific London Borough Challenge category on my blog, though (here).
I was thinking of visiting Wanstead Park/Flats and general area when I wanted to find some good bluebells. Bit late for that, now, but still looks nice.

Actually I've just been checking Yersinia's schedule and it isn't too bad for me, because she started in my home territory. Essentially, my tricky bit is the outer ring clockwise from Havering round to Hillingdon. (Well, most of Outer London. It's an funny old year when I leave out any of the Inner London boroughs.)
So there's something on the remaining schedule for me for any month there. This is sheer stamp collecting, but what the heck...

Yeah, the schedule was meant to make things easier, not to act as an extra hurdle - just that if I leave all the 'difficult' boroughs till last, I'll probably never get to them, so that slicing it up cakewise and working round seemed a reasonable approach.
Course, there are lots of boroughs I've been in this year without it being part of the grand plan.
Like Mondo, I'm blogging them, but I'm a bit behind on that. Got distracted, of course.. Ooh! There's a butterfly...

Yep the trains are out until tuesday. Yersinia it is confusing the flats / park thing especially when even some maps call the flats " Wanstead Flats Park " ??? The park is in Redbridge and pretty self contained and well worth a visit. The flats are essentially the original start to Epping Forest ( hence Forest Gate ) and still just about stretch out that far but also taking in parts of other boroughs like Waltham Forest as well. If you go to Manor Park Station and turn left part of the flats , the cemetery and Wanstead Park are all close. But the only bit of Newham you would see would be the cemetery and a bit of the flats. It depends what you like but Green St has a real buzz about it with authentic asian street food etc, It might be worth checking what is on at Theatre Royal in Stratford, the Theatre Bar is good too. Miles away but Thames Barrier Park is also Newham..happy hunting :-)

Yeah, I know the bit of Newham near to the river - it's easy cycling distance (through the tunnels or on the ferry), plus I did the triathlon around Excel. I don't know the bits further north at all.
Oh well. Went and did stuff in another borough that I hardly know, instead.

I elected to do Wanstead Park, in fact. Though it wasn't as interesting as I remember - there was a bit too much nature for me, I think I went there in autumn before when it's a little more atmospheric. But it killed two birds with one stone, because Redbridge's only Grade I listed building (St Mary the Virgin) is nearby. And things get more appealing when you get to the Roding, which has dead supermarket trolleys, pylons and the North Circular close by. How good can it get?
Still contemplating that Havering/Barking route, though Yersinia has raised a good point about the trains...
