About us
We are a registered charity whose mission is to make London a world-class cycling city.
-To improve the quality of life in London by increasing cycling.
-To involve people from all London’s communities in cycling.
-To bring about the best possible services for people who want to cycle in London.
-To be at the forefront of research and policy linking cycling to wider issues.
Since 1978, we’ve been improving facilities, providing information and raising the profile of cycling across London. We campaign for better designed and constructed provision for cyclists such as cycle lanes, better cycle parking, improved access to cycling for people of all abilities and improved cycling access to London’s parks and canal towpaths. We work to consolidate and develop cycling’s role within transport policy and implementation, increasing driver awareness of cycling safety, and ensuring regulations covering cycle facilities are fair.
Our campaigns include lobbying for access to cycle routes under threat of closure by Olympics construction, and encouraging LCC members to write to the Mayor of London in opposition to his proposal for a bike registration scheme. The London Development Agency now says that both the Thames Path and the Lee Valley navigation will remain open during the construction period, and Mr Livingstone has since shelved the scheme.
We also work with community groups to set up practical cycling projects, offering information and advice on project ideas, assistance in planning and organising projects and events, help in identifying funding opportunities and our expertise in all things cycling. The Community Cycling Fund for London (CCFL) project, funded by Transport for London, allows community groups to apply for up to £5,000 for cycling projects that will encourage, support and promote cycling in their community. In 2006, we allocated grants to over 20 community projects in London.
We develop resources for everyday cycling, including our set of 13 information booklets about cycling, ranging from Buying a Bike and Getting Started to Cycle Security and Cycle Maintenance, which you can download from our website. We also worked on the London Cycle Guides produced by Transport for London to encourage more Londoners to choose cycling as their mode of transport.
Our work is supported by a number of corporate affiliates including the Met Police and the BBC. We offer our consultancy services to these companies, including cycle audits to show businesses what they can do to become socially responsible and environmentally friendly.
We are non-party political and our activities are non-violent, non-discriminatory and environmentally responsible. We work with a wide range of organisations, including other cycling, sustainable transport and environmental groups as well as major employers. Our London-wide campaigns are backed up by local groups, who are made up of LCC members in various London boroughs. These groups also campaign at borough level, liaising with local authorities to comment on plans and developments which will impact on cyclists, pedestrians and the local area.
LCC members automatically become members of their local group, so they can get involved with campaigns and lobbying for better cycling facilities in their area. LCC local groups also hold events and workshops on a regular basis, including social rides of varying levels all year round.
Members are also entitled to a number of other benefits, including discounts in over 75 bike shops across London and insurance deals – and our magazine London Cyclist, which is delivered free to members every two months and covers cycling news in London, features on topics behind the news from London, the UK and around the world, current listings of rides, events, shops and maintenance workshops and more.
