Annoyance at Petticoat Lane

view profile

Earlier today I was taking a picture at the corner of Middlesex St and Wentworth St (Petticoat Lane), one of the most photographed streets in London, and which is close to my workplace. As I did so, I heard a voice say "Hey, ho' - no photos round here". I looked round at the person who'd spoken, who was a young lad, barely old enough to shave, sitting with a couple of others. I was tempted to tell him to piss off, but remembered that the usual advice about street photography is to avoid trouble... so I just looked directly at him, walked on and carried on taking pictures. Nonetheless, in the wake of the recent riots (which didn't actually hit this area) I found it disturbing that some youngster was trying to claim ownership of the street here. Having worked in the area for some time, I know that there is an issue with gangs. Has anyone else experienced hassle whilst photographing Petticoat Lane, or was this a one-off?

He could of been the "outside man" looking out for a group who were trying to sell off their ill-gotten gains, too scared to try ebay etc.
that'd make them camera shy.
Can't think of any other reason for aggression about being photographed in Petticoat Lane at this moment in time.

Of course it could be something entirely different.

Print a couple out & keep them with you when taking pics in public. The moaners soon shut up after reading it!

I had the same thing in the graffiti tunnel (Waterloo), I just moved on a little bit and carried on.
