Snappy Snaps very high contrast

view profile

poundofcarrots says:

I've just had a few rolls of film processed and scanned at Snappy Snaps Kentish Town. The Fuji Superia 200 film and Kodak Portra 160 was shot with a Contax 167MT and a Contax T2.

The scans I've received back are incredibly high contrast. Can anyone suggest why this may be the case? There was very good light when the films were used but the contrast is just too much in my opinion.

Snappy Snaps are a franchise and vary a great deal from branch to branch, some are good and some are awful - they're very much pot luck - even branches that used to be good can change if the staff do.

But If you have used them before with good results, I'd try taking them back and complaining.
Otherwise, try somewhere else, like West End Cameras on Tott Ct Rd who have usually done a good job with mine and aren't too expensive.

Thanks for your reply. Since posting, I've scanned a few negs myself and the difference is huge. There were lines on some of the scanned images they gave that are not present on my scans. Also, my scans are considerably less contrast-y and saturated than the Snappy Snaps scans.

I was just wondering why theirs would turn out like this?

ask them to add no colour correction and tell them of this contrast issue, don't make a big deal out of it and I'm sure they will listen to you and next time they should be better. after all they want and need your business.

I recently got some film Dev and scanned at my local SS and i needed to brighten them up a little in PP. I would expect to do some PP on lab scans as I would do on my own ones too. M

How much does West End Cameras charge for Standard and Xpro 35mm 36 exp develop and scan - no prints? I find Snappy Snaps very expensive.

Thanks for reply unsoundmind?. I didn't realise colour correction may have been applied but that would explain the very saturated colours. The other issue is the lines on the scans and that every scan has a white strip at the edge of the frame that would show up on any print.

Considering the person I spoke to in the shop seemed quite knowledgable, the results of the process are incredibly poor. They also returned two blank films. I don't think I've shot a blank film in 20+ years of photography. Makes me a bit suspicious that they're responsible for that too!

i totally blame Garrick St for messing up my film - ive shot two rolls through the same camera since and they have come out fine with home developing.

Im going to check out West End Cameras for my next c41

Weird. I use Snappy Snaps, in KT, a lot and I've never had a problem with them. In fact, I think they're terrific and use them for all my professional film processing and save myself a ton of money as a result.

Did you take the negs back to them and point out your concerns? Surely that would be the best route rather than by complaining about it here?

Good luck getting it sorted out.

Snappy Snaps on Kentish Town high street is very good in my experience, and cheaper than most across London for processing and scanning.

I strongly advise against using the Snappy Snaps in Farringdon (cowcross street) I went once and the negative scans were like 360kb, incredibly low quality, whilst not even bothering to correctly scan the full frame of the image, as you can see here..
