Decent Photography Shops in London/Online?

view profile

PavelDavydenko says:

Hi all!

I've just had a bad experience with buying a second hand equipment from e-bay sellers and now have decided to spend my money with somebody decent.

So my question will be as follows:
Does anybody know any used photographic equipment shops in London? Or would anybody recommend any online stores?

Thanks!

If you're a Nikon shooter, Gray's of Westminster has a great collection of used gear at fair prices. They are a Nikon-only dealer, however.

If you are looking for new gear, see Chris at Jessop's in Islington.

A bit out of London, but SRS Microsystems in Watford are first class and I would second Camea World, they're decent too.

Forgot the biggest of the lot - Calumet near Euston.

I would agreee with Camera World. Always had good service there. They are in Wells Street just off Oxford Street. London Camera Exchange in The Strand also has a lot of second hand equipment. I also use Teddington Photographic as they are local to me. They have a lot of second hand gear-www.teddingtonphotographic.com

Park Cameras are an excellent on-line store, I have used them several times they are very reliable and reasonably priced, delivery is always when stated, they have some previously used equipment which looks to be a pretty high standard.

Silverprint are selling Oly OM1 &2's and the trip - and a lovely range of zero Image :)
as well as some plastic crap for potentious art students :(
but you can pick up all your developing stuff at the same time & dump off your used fixer!!!!

Ebay is really hit and miss - i got a fantastic deal on a RoBoT star which i love to bits - but have also ended up with some broken shite.

as a general rule now i avoid ebay

Aperture on Museum street (used them a lot)

I've spotted a couple of other shops on a parallel to Museum street, I think one was York camera? (never used them)

Also, there are a couple of 2nd hand shops towards the end of Tottenham Court Road (Euston end). (never used them)

Jacobs on new Oxford Street also has a lot of used stuff round the back. (used them)

There is also Nicholas cameras opposite Mornington Crescent station. (been there a few times but didn't buy anything in the end)

Grays of Westminster is the place to go for Nikon stuff, as already said.

There is also sendeancameras in the centre, used them earlier this year for a Hasselblad repair and they also sell some 2nd stuff.

Fixation in Vauxhall has some 2nd stuff as well (they do mostly repairs).

Online I've used ffordes, mifsuds, t4cameras and waltersphotovideo. No problems.

As for ebay, I've bought and sold many items over the time. Once had an issue with a lens but the seller sorted that out. Just be careful and you can get some really good deals. Check the feedback, not just the percentage and if it is good but for what transactions as well. Somebody having 100% feedback selling 200 bits of junk for 10p and then suddenly having a super deal on £2000 of equipment, yours for only £499 including P&P is dodgy.

London Camera Exchange. Two weeks ago I purchased a used Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM from their store at the Strand: friendly people, good advise with competitive prices for 2nd hand gear. Happy shopping.

Thank you for your replies! Very kind of you all!

I have recently come across a shop in Camden High Street called "Nicholas Camera". They have an advertisement in "Amateur Photography" mag with a big list of really exiting gear + they seam to have a relatively up to date web page - www.nicholascamera.com . I have spent about 40min talking to a very nice black guy behind the counter.

So that would be my suggestion to myself ))))

Thank you everybody, I did really save some time with help of you.

Did you ask for any prices whilst you were in Nicholas Cameras or ask to have a look at some of the 'exciting gear' ?

Apart from high prices they really have rather a poor reputation.

I've bought 3 DSLRs off of ebay and all have been great value and in excellent condition.I've also bought lenses and 2 DSLRs from various cash converters shops (with the added advantage of being able to inspect the items before purchaes) so I'm sad that ebay seems to be a source of concern - I'm also an ebay seller and have successfully sold DSLRs to very satisfied customers. I think there is little difference except of course for an auction (buyer beware) and secondhand goods in shops - it really depends how trustworthy you feel the vendors are.

Onlne I'd recommend Peter Walnes (I've purchased from him before) and FFordes which does have a very high reputation - prices are not outrageous either-in fact often very competitive. LCE on-line is also excellent for the sheer range of what they have on offer.Nicholas I have no info except I think thier prices are high going by the adverts in AP.

If you exercise a bit of common sense, and in particular read the description and ask the appropriate questions of the seller - it's worth asking a question just to see if / how the seller responds , eBay can be a really good source.

Amazon and warehousexpress. My preferenc is amazon. I have returned quite a few items with no problems and they refund postage which I think is amazing.

OMG - Dont use Nicholas cameras - their prices are sky high and they show no respect for their equipment.

You have possibly stumbled across the worst camera shop in London.

Yes avoid Nicholas I went in there once and the guy started shouting at me when I said his lens was too expensive. He has anger management issues.
