I doubt it would ever get to court. The police are far too trigger happy these days

A tripod will help, especially for night shooting.
I usually use a small travel tripod on my trips like the Slik Mini Pro. It is very strong and sturdy, even with my DSLR in portrait orientation. I am currently shooting with it in Paris.
Some example locations and shots from London here:

I often use tripod around London, as long as your not on private property you'll be fine, perhaps around 'sensitive' sights police might ask what your up to but it's unlikely.

All this nonsense has stopped thanks to several protests this year by thousands of togs, your welcome!
Bring the legs and drop em where you want.

I was in London a couple of weeks ago and saw a few tripods here and there. I also saw a bulky SLR on a monopod inside the barriers at Whitehall on Remembrance Day, so he got that through tight security, and he did not seem to be with the press.

Thanks for all of your answers. I've decided to bring my tripod along next week. I'm really looking forward to that trip :-)

Always carry a tripod for shooting in London. It adds a spurious level of legitimacy that prevents a lot of trouble. And if not, you can brandish it menacingly.

Just a case of using common sense. You wouldn't want to use a tripod in the middle of Oxford Street during the shopping hours but I use my heavy duty Gitzo often enough and have never been challenged. This one was shot from my tripod. But for travelling you might find it a bit heavy in which case try a good quality monopod or perhaps a Gorrilapod.

If you have been photographing in London before you would realise it is difficult to get a shot without something moving ,so in long exposure this might affect you picture.

London is lovely, but our light is weak. This year I learnt to never leave home without a tripod.
And I did nearly whack a young punk who threw a snowball at me this evening. Damn kids.

In London I have had problems from the private security staff, they try to quote the law and say its illegal to photograph in their building and they often threaten to call the police, but stand your ground as they know that if your in a public area there's nothing they can do.
There has also been a lot times I have been in the city with the camera without a tripod and I have had many good night shots just by placing the camera on walls and ledges

So with or without a tripod you should get some excellent shots
