Battersea Power Station

Hello all, last weekend i attended the Redbull Xfighters event at Battersea power station, I foolishly didn't take my camera as I was worried that it would get damaged.. only to arrive and find myself surrounded by people with DSLRs snapping away and no doubt getting some cool pictures of MX bike flipping upside down against the dramatic backdrop of the power station.

anyway... does anyone happen to know if you can get anywhere near this location when events are not on, perhaps even inside it? would love to take some shots.

They sometimes open up parts of the powerstation though never the inside as it it too dangerous with the walls caving in.

You could ask them: info@battersea-powerstation.com

I was there a few weeks ago and couldn't get close. It's all boarded up no doubt for safety reasons.

When I was a photography student in 1988, I broke into the power station to do an urban fashion/portrait shoot. In those days the railway yards were still there and there was a giant mural of the original Big Brother from the filming of 1984! Happy days - must lookout those negatives...

I go past it on the train every day and I can see the site is usually patrolled by security guards with dogs so breaking in probably isn't an option now. They do a lot of location filiming there and stuff .

Such a shame you can't get close these days, a shot from the opposite side of the river seems about it :(

- stevedavey.com... would love to see those shots if you find them!

I got inside last October, as part of a tour by the company that owns the building now. We went all around the place, even inside the remains of the main building between the four chimney stacks.

It's pretty beat up in there now, and we had to wear hard hats, boots and hi-viz jackets, but it was fascinating. We only had an hour and there were quite a few other people taking shots, so was a bit rushed and tricky to get a clear shot - still worth doing though.

There are a few shots on my stream, but a lot of what I took didn't really do the place justice.

The address that Karen mentioned above is the one I used as well - worth dropping them a line to see if they still run the tours.

I was there in 2006 when the Serpentine Gallery staged the China Power Station exhibition there. It was amazing getting inside and really sad to see how it's been allowed to rot.

The art was good too, though most visitors seemed to be ignoring it completely!

I think there was an article about the interior of the BPS in last weeks Mail on Sunday - one about the control rooms(both of which look in pretty good nick - one very much art deco and the other 1950's style - so all is not lost and one would hope that who ever redevelops it is sensitive. There is aglimmer of hope as the northern line tube extension is going to be alongside it which will make this part of London more accessible and therfore more attractive.
