Tall buildings in London to photograph from?

view profile

GarethHudson  Pro User  says:

Hi everyone,

I'd like to know of any tall buildings that the public can go to the top of and take photos of other buildings and streets. I've heard people talk about buildings in NY, Tottonto and other cities in the world to do this but nothing of high places in London to photograph from.
Thanks.
Gareth.

The big wheel thing is the obvious one. Can always go to Vertigo 42 although they might not appreciate you snapping away if it's busy.
I'm out of ideas, however London looks pretty crappy from high up (I work in a 30 floor building in Canary Wharf).

The Monument is always a popular one, too. A lot cheaper to get up than the eye too.

as mentioned, canary wharf and the monument and the eye are all good, but you could also try tower bridge.
Oh and if you go up to the Royal Observetary at Greenwich you get a great view over the Docklands ( including Batersea power station, the Dome and Canary Wharf - see www.flickr.com/photos/simon_vardy/305708715/ and mirror-uk-rb1.gallery.hd.org/_exhibits/places-and-sights/...
St pauls is also very good.
I could list more if I could be bothered to think harder...

you can't see Battersea Power station from Greenwich (not very well at least), you can however get a good view of Greenwich power station

Really you need to forget the tall building thing, this is no NYC, Hong Kong, Chicago, Tokyo etc (cool clusters of tall buildings) everything you want to see, shoot or be involved with (minus the odd exception) is street level.

For very tall buildings your're going to have to wait for 2012 when the Shard London Bridge and The Bishopsgate tower is built. But for now top of hills have great views like Primrose Hill or The one in Greenwich Park

Westminster Roman Catholic Cathedral Campanile is good, I think. And Guy's Hospital Tower, though the windows are often dirty.

yeah like already said The Monument was what first came to my mind - not fantastic but you do get some views and it doesnt cost much to get up - plus its another historic site and getting up to the top of something that some of us like the challenge of!? Also up the top of the Arch at Hyde Park corner gives a pretty good view over Buckingham palace gardens and a few surrounds, and also yes Ive up to Westminster Cathedral too which was quite good views....the best views Ive had have probably actually been from flights into London!

There's a free viewing area on the 8th floor of OXO Tower, which has excellent views over St Pauls, for example.

Tower 42 (the old natwest building) has a bar at the top though you do have to pre-book and buy at least a drink.

st.paul's has good views from the viewing gallery. i second westminster cathedral and tower bridge, both good.

i have a soft spot for primrose hill which has reasonable views.

otherwise try to befriend someone in one of the barbican towers or book a meeting with someone in the city and then take a couple of crafty shots.

The view from the Westminster Cathedral tower gives you a 360º over London and it's very close to Buckingham Palace. It's a great view.

Little known outside of the London Borough of Ealing, which has Horsenden Hill, from where you can see most of London's higher landmarks from several miles away, and Wembley Stadium which is quite close. To get there, take the tube to Ealing Broadway then bus 297 (get off at Perivale Community Centrre) or tube to Perivale and short walk.
