I fake my lomo affect with a photoshop action called Lomoize V2. I just hit a button and it's done.
I also own a real lomo and find that it's pretty darn close!

I just tried looking online for it, which is where I found it... it was a photoshop action that you put in the action folder and voila, it's done. I just re-googled it and cannot find it to save my life. Email me if you'd like me to send it over, I'm pretty sure I won't be running afoul of any copyrights.

I have a better solution.
conceptDawg created a Lomo Simulator Script for Photoshop. This script will make images look great despite image resolution.
Check out this post on the Technique Group

I'm not sure I like conceptDawg's better. It tend to bring out reds too much, so I end up throwing most of my results away, or spending way too much time tweaking. Riv's scripts gives me much better results consistently. Any want examples of both?

@jary - Who is Riv, and where can I find his/her script?
Thanks

Thanks for the advice, Wassanova. I use Paint Shop Pro 9 as my editor of choice, and with a few modifications I was able to adapt your instructions into a script. If there are any other users of PSP out there, I'd be happy to share. I'm having a lot of fun with it.

Love that Photoshop action from Riv's link! I'd never used "actions" before. What an amazing universe is Photoshop.

I love concept dog's script. And since all the adjustments are divided into layers you can still adjust his adjustments to fine tune your image. Super.
I've come to realize I really enjoy faking lomos.

I add on a VERY slight radial blur to the vignetted areas of the pic - i think many lomo actions focus on the contrast/vignette/saturation while ignoring the lens blurring and distortion around the edges.

I too have a couple of actions I use, one I made up, one I got somewhere on flickr long ago. The one thing I do differerntly is use a filter that's in more recent versions of photoshop, found here: 'Filter, Distort, Lens Correction'
You can add a slight fisheye effect, and at the same time vignette the corners of the photo to darken them.
Like burnblue, I too add a slight radial blur to the edges of the photo.
Sometimes I find they look better in black & white, sometimes color.
I just found this group, and I'm really happy you exist, so I'll start posting my results.

Wizmo; your radial blur to the edges is a great idea, and one that I think is far too often ignored in lomo-fakery. Thanks for the great advice!
On a related note then, when you do your radial blur, what process do you use? I'm curious to see how you've come out with some of the results that you have.

I have a number of actions, I have the CHLomoScript from ConceptDawg and I like it for really intense contrast effects.
But, I find that the Script from Nitorix is the most effective at simulating the Lomo effect, it's closer to the real thing that the CHLomoScript I feel.

I use the radial blur with the spin setting, usually only one pixel is all it takes, and only on the edges. It's found under Filter>Blur>Radial Blur, and choose 'Spin'
You can also change the focal point of the blur by clicking on the little diagram in the Radial Blur dialog box. Hope this helps.

i am using jake ingman's lomolize atn, unfortunately his site is down (forever?) but you can grab the file from here
and all you lomo-fans i bet you are interested in this lovely app here
Multimatic lomo-simulator
"Multimatic is a software tool for compositing digital images. It is designed to produce the same effects as multi-lens cameras, such as the Lomographic Super Sampler, Action Sampler, Pop9 or Oktomat. It works with digital image sources, and as a result is much more flexible in what it can do."
Lovely script, used together with lomo actions you can easily simulate the lomo feeling!
-happy new year to you all-

To justify the high price that are charged for a Lomo camera, the guys that sell them have marketed them as a lifestyle product.
On the Lomo website, they exercise an editorial policy of only showing certain types of photo. These photo's match the lifestyle that they want people to associate with the lomo.
So if you realy want to fake the lomo effect, you must only pick photo's of things like:
a waif-like girl lounging around in the park.
people jumping into swimming pools.
your feet, as you walk on some grass.
a close-up of the waif-like girl's cleavage.
some people on their way to a party.
people at the party gurning into the camera's lens.
...basicaly, you should aim to make your life appear to be much more exciting than it really is, and to make it look like you spend all your time hanging-out with attractive people.

Here's a tutorial i made on creating light leaks. I made it last year and have since improved upon the technique. But that's basically it.
It works a lot better (as i say in "Method Two") if you use a brush and then motion blur, rather than the gradient as i do in "Method One".
And the tutorial is here: www.deviantart.com/view/25341213/

calvinbuddy: try www.gimp.org/ - almost as good as photoshop, probably better than Elements, and free.

And there are a few Lomo plugins written for the Gimp, as well. The one by Dave Seaton at the gimp plugin site works rather well, IMO. There is another one that I cannot find again, but it creates a wonderfully irregular vignetting in the upper and lower left side, and really amps up the saturation.
I'm still trying to get that slight yellow/soft/grainy look, though.

There's a faster, easier way, with a lot more control, but it's expensive: just do a google search for the word: melancholytron
....and then when you're done, run it through optik verve labs' "virtual photographer." it's freeware. it can turn your color photos to b&w but with either red, blue, or green filtration, and you can add grain to simulate film.

Whatever you do and whichever PS action you use, don't do the oh-so-common "rectangular vignetting." Real vignetting is circular!

Scroll down to the bottom and there is a great tutorial on how to cross process in PS. It goes into detail and explains why you are doing things, gives alternatives, etc. He also explains vignetting. His tutorials are incredible, he has really taught me almost everything I know about PP in PS. I suggest checking out his stuff.
It's also available as a video podcast for those iPod podcast mongers.
Curves are key, no matter how much you plan to exaggerate it btw.
