About Lochaber
Although historically referring to a smaller area, in a modern sense Lochaber (Loch Abar in Gaelic) in the West Highlands of Scotland covers south-west Inverness-shire and parts of north Argyll, from Loch Hourn and Glen Garry in the north, south to north Appin and Rannoch Moor, and from the western edge of Badenoch to Ardnamurchan and the Small Isles.
Its main settlements include Fort William, Ballachulish, Acharacle, Mallaig, Ardgour, Kilchoan, Spean Bridge, Kinlochleven and Invergarry, and includes distinct areas such as Moidart, Knoydart, Morar, Morvern, Ardnamurchan and The Braes.
It is an area of superlatives; Scotland's highest mountain, Ben Nevis, rises to 4,406 feet above Fort William, Loch Morar bottoms out at 1,017 feet as Scotland's deepest freshwater loch, and Ardnamurchan Point is Scotland's westernmost point. The marketing name of The Outdoor Capital of the UK speaks for itself - the area is a mecca for those with an interest in outdoor activities.
It is also an area of cultural and historical importance, with traditional music thriving amongst the young, and West Lochaber is one of the few mainland areas where Gaelic is spoken as a community language. Shinty is a thriving sport in the area, with several teams competing at senior level.
