LEGO Military Models Build Challenge #3: Military Innovation roundup
|
I wasn't sure what to expect in regard to the turnout for LMMBC #3, as not holding one in such a long time could have one of two effects. Either people would be excited about a new one and we'd be flooded with entries, or they'd have lost interest and we wouldn't receive many entries at all. Instead, the turnout was somewhere between those two extremes.
The first entry is an F-80 Shooting Star by air or space, who also submitted a Ford GPA Seep (Sea Jeep). The subject material of both vehicles is just what we were looking for, and the vehicles themselves are nice as well.
Robin Chang, a.k.a. GreenLead, also submitted two entries, both fictional vehicles designed for his Lego States Armed Forces. The first is a transport hover-sled, and the second is an infantry fighting vehicle. Though they're both renderings, instead of physical creations, they're very high quality, and the creations themselves are excellent.
D-Town Cracka entered a Strv 103B, an odd-looking Swedish main battle tank that he nearly flawlessly replicated. I would've liked to see it in an accurate Swedish Army camo scheme, but it's undeniably a fantastic build.
My co-admin Ralph Savelsberg, better known as Mad physicist, built an MV-22B Osprey, and he really outdid himself. With moving parts galore, including retractable landing gear, rotating engine nacelles, and even a folding wing, it has to be one of my favorite creations that I've seen in a long time.
Maks_ built a Humvee, and while perhaps not the most innovative vehicle, it's a nice build nonetheless.
Again, I'm not quite sure what's so innovative about the two naval ships that legowanderer submitted, but one doesn't really see many warships in the brick, so I suppose that makes them innovative in and of themselves.
Simon T James hasn't been on flickr all that long, but in that time, he's quickly become one of my favorite builders. Up until now, he's mostly built ground vehicles, but both of the entries that he submitted are aircraft, and they're both excellent. The first is a fictional attack helicopter with an unconventional rotor configuration, and the second is a model of the F-35 Lightning II.
My entry is a model of the A7V, the first German-built tank. I decided to build a model of specific vehicle, Panzer 503 of Abteilung 3, which allowed me to incorporate accurate markings and camo. I tried to build the camo scheme in a way that resembled the original's, and, though it was tricky, I'm quite happy with the result.
Another digital entry, Lego Pilot's Tiger II prototype built by Porsche is a unique model in a world flooded with similar-looking LEGO WWII vehicles. Digital models tend to get overlooked, but it really is a great build that's accurate to the source material.
Aleksander Stein's entry is a battery of ARCHER Artillery System vehicles. While the basic model itself has been around for a while, one can't dispute the impressiveness of seeing four of them together. Built on commision from Bofors, the company that manufactures the ARCHER, Aleks has his work cut out for him, as these vehicles are only the first batch of twelve that he's working on.
Malydilnar's unmanned land vehicle is well-suited to the build challenge in concept, but part of me thinks that it resembles a real-life APC a bit too much. It's still a great build nonetheless, and a nice conclusion to this roundup.
I'd like to thank everyone who took the time to build for this build challenge, and to anyone who bothers to read this roundup. :-)

Thanks for the roundup, Chandler, sorry I didn't get around to doing any building for this myself.

We'll most likely run the annual spring contest before we do another build challenge.

Relax, the spring contest is simply amazing - you really get to see the cream of the crop spring into action on a wide variety of military subjects.
