What’s on your Gaffer short list?

view profile

scarpati  Pro User  says:

You’re a gaffer (responsible for the design and execution of the lighting plan for a production.)
Gaffer (boss), a British colloquial term for "boss" or "old man"

What’s (on your short list) to bring to work? Aka = gadget bag?

Now around the home or farm –
(bailing wire & duct tape) might be 1st on that list!
but as a gaffer, These might not be as high on the list….

The List:
Gloves
Gaffer tape (tears easily, doesn’t burn or leave behind residue)
Cinefoil
Pliers
C-47 clamps (yup just a reversed clothes pin!)

Cool & innovative "light weight" stuff that will fit in a backpack!!

I will never forget the day a gaffer showed me how to reverse a close pin, and get a BAG of useful clamps (for no money / that takes up little to no room)
or
Using Cinefoil to get a light flagged in seconds with no C-stands or bulky light modifiers Required!
or
Switching from duct tape to gaffers tape! That saved a ton of time & mess In the long haul!

I am sure there’s tons more!! Kinda like – what’s on your tool belt !?!

And YES Super Clamps totally fits that bill – they are SUPER!!!

things that make you say DUHHHHHHHHH... why didnt I think of that!!

Ami's post makes me think of another fun List!!
”From the Camera operators point of view”….

What little “cheap’ things can bring a shoot to its knees?
Worth buying many of!!!

For me (so far) it is - 6 to 4 pin Firewire adapters, sync cables,
Batteries!!!

Brianphoto
I don’t have & have never used a magic arm!!
Looked it up!! Is this as useful & duhh how did I work
Without this as the super clamp?? What do you use it for?

magic arms are great because you can attach all sorts of things to them. With a super clamp on one end you can fix a lightweight light to anywhere. Also good for remote cameras, i've used several magic arms on super extended tripods to add rigidity to the frame (and hang a sandbag from) so it won't wobble (i'm talking about the monster gitzos fully extended)

Also, J hooks are great for location shooting. You can hang your packs off of it. A super clamp and a j hook together are amazing. You have 1) a "sand bag" 2) keeps your pack off the ground from getting dirt inside it or water or sand or whatever.

Just keep it low so you get the sandbag effect.

Hmm, headlamp for sure (never know when you won't have light and usually you need both hands)

ill write back if i can think of anything else.

When I assisted, I kept the normal things like extra A clamps, gaff tape, and Sharpies, but it was the little things that made the photogs say, "awe yeah".

Like an outlet checker, (to make sure that plugs were hot on location), a lot of plug converters (grounded to non-ground plugs), bungee cords, a compass, small flashlight (maglite) and a hands free flashlight, string, monofiliment and wire, hemostats and tweezers, velcro, ticky tack, c-47's, little plexi-mirrors, a box cutter, a leatherman, a point and and a few other sorted odds and ends.

The few of us that charged a lot, did so because we were good at our jobs, but we also brought something to the party, a grip kit, all in a tackle box. Sadly, most assistants just bring themselves these days...

Gaff tape (several colors, always at least carry the 2" size), Gloves, Pony clamps (several sizes), C47s, Mafer clamps, rope, ball bungees, regular bungees, Magic arms (and safety cable). If I don't have what I need, I go into the bag with this stuff and MAKE what I need to modify the light. Or I have some crafty assistants who can make even better use of it when I need them to!

a sharpie to mark the photographers water/soda bottle caps. as well as other uses, but for me don't bring me a drink unless it's marked.

A few weeks back I picked up some black felt sheets (12x18) from a crafts store:
www.michaels.com/art/online/displayProductPage?productNum...

At three different shoots recently these came in handy. Once I used one with some gaffer tape to make a snoot for a speedlight. At another shoot I taped it to a large light source to flag off part of the light to kill some specular highlights. Then, just the other day in studio I used one as a black reflector to darken the side of a product I was shooting.

Very versatile, and cheap enough that you can buy a bunch and cut them up for various purposes.

really safe for writing on CD DVD media?
or does that ink eat threw to the data also???

No - I did not, nor will I claim to have invented it - but I can't find out who did, so for the time being, I am just documenting it...
