making letters

illum is a group administrator illum says:

I noticed that a lot of what users in this group do is lots of light art and very little actual light writing (Illum is no exception here). If we need some kind of wording that is neat, I usually make a stencil because my handwriting is typically bad anyway. While designs and free-flowing light looks great, sometimes it is useful to write words in your photos and add them into the surroundings.

I wanted to start this thread incase someone did not know how to write letters with light or if someone has an easier way than how Illum does it. I have not seen much written on this, so here is how we do it and it would be cool if other people would post how they make letters.

There are two ways that we use. First, the easiest is to have your back to the camera, hold the light facing the camera, but to your side. Make you letters as if you were writing on paper.
The second way is to face the camera, have the light in front of you also facing the camera. You have to write from right to left and your letters have to be flipped horizontally 180 degrees. Practice as if you were writing on a fogged-up window for someone to read from the other side. It takes some practice, but once you get the hang of it, you can get pretty good at it and it will go pretty quickly.

One tip is to use the scenery around to make a mental grid of an area to write so that your letters come out correct and inline.

If writing backwards isn’t your thing, you can write normally (just as you would be writing on a piece of paper) with both you and the light facing the camera, and then afterwards, flip it horizontally in a photo editing program.

Illum has also tried writing on walls with light. This looks like real graffiti and comes out pretty cool. ( flickr.com/photos/illum/1560091419/ )
We use a very bright, intense light to do this. We put the camera over to the side and back at an angle, then put the bright flashlight close to but not touching the wall, then proceed to write or draw as if it was a large canvas. No flipping of the letters is necessary here because you will be writing in the same way that the camera picks it up. In a lot of ways "writing on walls" can be easier because there is something there (actual lines if it is a brick wall) to gauge the size of your letters from. I encourage you to give it a try sometime.

What is your favorite writing technique? Please chime in.

Greetings of Illum, I wish to share tips and tricks how to write on walls difficult inscriptions. I use a chalk. For an example a card in which I used a chalk - www.flickr.com/photos/churkinms/2466527107/in/set-7215760... The green arrow more exactly also is more correct than white because I on a wall have drawn a chalk a correct arrow, and for white I did not draw

my technique is about the same as yours, writing backwards.
however, one trick i've come up with is using a secondary tripod next to my writing to gauge the height.

i use one of these with a telescoping post and use the clamps as guides for the tops and bottoms of letters and pictures.

Great stuff... I can't wait to try. I normally stand with my back to the camera and point the light at the camera.

I have Energizer light sticks. I also stand with my back to the camera but hold the light sticks in the way like a pencil. The camera picks up the back of the glowstick and it works.

I find drawing letters backwards facing the camera to have the best look. It's hard since you do write backwards, but it's not that hard to try over and over to get it right.

As far as what Illum said about flipping the photograph afterwards, in my opinion that would kill any soul that the light painting had to begin with. It just shows laziness or unwillingness to try extra hard to achieve something that may not be simple to begin with. Everyone can be their own person, but real light junkies should have a pull towards leaving photos straight out of camera, sooc.

Here is a one liner drawing i did yesterday and the video.

TCB you and your friends have some awesome handwriting skills there, really loving the piece with the light changing pen.

As far as I can go contributing, I've only got a few letters I like, been working on making an alphabet for a while, but someone went and broke the tool I had :/

Thank you so much for this tutorial! I'm completely new to Light Painting, literally one week into it, but thanks to this I managed to successfully 'write' last night. It's not pretty or particularly brilliant, but it's a start and I'm excited to try more :-)

I had never heard of / thought of the writing on the wall technique. Definitely worth a go. I'm with tcb - practice practice and the backwards writing gets a lot easier. I find it helps to take your time - find the darker areas and it gives you more time to think without worrying about a blown shot or light pollution.

And...just to show off a bit... light calligraphy! Still haven't been able to find 'junkies' so if anyone has any thoughts or could flickrmail the character to me...
