I was busy thinking of way to attach gels(roscolux swatch book swatches) to a flash. I wanted it to have the ability to change colors quickly and not reduce the light any more than the filters do already. By putting them in some sort of 'case' like a clear plastic envelope type thing would definitely reduce the light. I have been taping them on with clear taped but found that this ruined them quickly and was limited to one color per shot.

I made this a few nights ago before I went to shoot at the temple. I was able use 4 colors freely. It worked great. None of the filters were damaged and I can use this again and again. I plan on making several more. Each one will be a themed swatch book. This one was the first one and it was RGB and purple. I will keep making them as I need them.

gel cartridge

What I used.
Gels swatch books .... 0$
Cardboard ......0$
Used Minolta flash that does not even fit my camera but that's OK.....12$

How to make it.
Get some corrugated cardboard. Cut a hole the exact size of your flash so it fits in the hole snug with out coming out the other side. Tape the gels to the back with clear tape trying to avoid the holes. Now go take some pictures

When you take you pics be careful not to let the actual flash be caught on camera. If I am in the shot I usually stand with my back to the camera and fire it in front of my chest at an angle to subject. This blocks the back flash from being caught on film. The point is to block the back flash using what ever you can. The best option is to stay out of the shot but this is not always possible.

This is just one idea. If you have any more please add them to this thread.

I love this idea. Does the cardboard fit snuggly on the flash or do you have to hold it on?

@ Bartiol - I think that is a better way if you are using one color. the problem with that is I often use 4 colors for one shot. I do use one color sometimes and this would be useful cause I would have a free hand.

thanks for the link.

hey andy7462.

could you expand on that a little. i just can't picture how velcro would be used.

is there some 'holder' for the filters that attaches to the flash with velcro?

any more ideas from people would be appreciated.

thanks in advance.

tdub, I made a couple of cardboard holders for my gels. I love them. It is so much easier than trying to hold the gel over the flash. thanks for the tutorial.

@ JFR check this thread for more info

about the 430ex. the 430ex ll was just released here so the 'old' 430ex dropped in price by about 30% down to 19800 yen(180USD). If you are in the market for a flash wait until your local store releases the new version because the old version will become cheaper.
