Shade fabric (& for privacy)

Does anyone have experience with different shade fabrics that let some sunlight in?

Hi SanDiegoAT! I don't have any experience with the shade fabric brands you mentioned. To be honest, I've only used shade fabric once, and it was a long time ago (I can't remember the brand). If it was me, I would choose the smallest percentage of sunlight blocked as possible. The plants you mentioned, as you noted, are all full-sun plants. Unlike orchids, which are accustomed to growing beneath a tree canopy, plants like bougainvillea want as much sunlight as possible, and need at least 6 hours of direct sun.
Have you considered training your bougainvillea on a trellis and then using the bougainvillea/trellis to block out some of the sun? It would do double duty, blocking out the view of the alley as well.

Gotcha. Cool idea! I still think you should aim for a low amount of sunlight blockage. If you heavily shade only part of the plant, it will stretch towards the stronger light source and create an unattractive shape.
You should post pictures when you're done so that the rest of us can learn from your experience. :-)

We have a similar climate here in Alicante. Too much sun already! I am searching for a pergola that doesn't break the bank! Have you thought about bamboo strips, they sell it by the metre here, very cheap, and to my mind looks better than any fabric.
Cheers,
