About Life Sciences Teaching Resource

This group is all about sharing pictures as a teaching resource for the Life Sciences disciplines. By posting images to this pool, you agree that these images may be used freely by educators and students in their class projects and presentations. Creative Commons licenses are welcome and appreciated, but not necessary as long as you agree to the above.

For a similar group for Earth Science, please check out the Earth Science Teaching Resource.

Educators and students:

You can use images from this pool for your classes, assuming permission from the photographer/artist by virtue of the pictures being in the group pool. If you do so, please do not plagiarize and always remember to properly acknowledge the photographer or artist with your use of the images. This is intended to be an extension of Fair Use for educational use only and no commercial use may be made of any of the pictures without a proper license from the copyright holder. If you intend to publish your presentation (e.g. make your lecture presentations available online), you may still be required to get permission from the photographer or artist. A word of caution for students: Before using pictures in a class project, check with your teacher first whether that is permissible for the assignment or may cost you points taken off your grade.

What fits into this group:

The Life Sciences include all fields of science that study living organisms, for example plants, animals, and humans, often with an emphasis on understanding how they function (e.g. the molecular, cellular and functional basis of life on this planet). The traditional cornerstones of the Life Sciences are Biology and Medicine, but interdisciplinary fields such as Bioinformatics or Nanotechnology may be included. See below for a (likely incomplete) list of possible topics. Photos that are clearly off topic or of no use as a teaching resource may be removed from the pool.

Notes and tagging:

Please add useful titles, descriptions, notes, and tags to your pictures that will allow people to search the pool for images fitting a particular topic or showing a particular species, phenomenon, or structure. As a minimum, please include a tag that denotes the field of science or type of class that the image might be useful for (e.g. microbiology, evolution, plant physiology etc). For generic pictures of organisms that do not highlight a particular phenomenon or structure, please include at minimum the full scientific species name in your tags. By posting images to the pool, you agree that others may add notes or tags to your images to enhance their usefulness as a teaching resource.

Comments and discussions:

There is no requirement to comment on pictures, but please feel free to comment on other people's photos and let them know when and how you are using their pictures. The folks posting images here would love to know whether they have actually been useful in the classroom! You are also welcome to start or add to discussions pertaining to the Life Sciences, for example requests for pictures fitting certain class topics, asking questions, offering explanations, etc. One exception for students: Please do not post your homework assignment questions! You're expected to answer those yourself, so don't try to cut corners. ;-)

List of Life Sciences disciplines and topics:

For starters, this list is from the Wikipedia entry on Life Sciences, but it may be amended over time as this field is evolving. Links to existing Flickr groups for subdisciplines may be included where available. If you have anything to add to this list, please contact the admin.
