Reopening Statue of Liberty' Crown
|
The National Park Service recently said that it had no intention of reopening the Statue of Liberty’s crown, which has been closed since the 9/11 attack. Federal officials said that public access to the top of the statue would pose a potentially catastrophic fire hazard.
Liberty Island was closed to the public after the 9/11 attacks. The statue’s base reopened to the public on Aug. 3, 2004, after a $20 million effort to improve fire safety, security and evacuation routes.
The crown of the statue is accessible only by a very narrow, double-helix spiral staircase with a low guardrail. The staircase was intended for periodic use by maintenance workers, not for heavy, daily use by the public.
The staircase does not meet any local, state or federal fire and building codes. Even for people in peak physical condition, climbing the 12-story-high staircase is a challenge.
Do you think the crown should be reopened?

I hope the crown is opened, not just for me but for my childrens sake. I enjoyed going up there as a child and my kids will also. I would love to go to the torch while we are at it!

Liberty Island and the Statue of Liberty are open. You can go to the crown, but you need to buy a pass. You can get one at www.statuecruises.com but they are selling out fast.

Crown access tickets are currently sold out through October. The earliest date available as of now (Aug 8th) is November 10th.
I got tickets for last Tuesday and took my friends' two boys who were visiting from AZ. They loved it, including the climb to the top.
They only permit approximately 250 crown access tickets per day, and each "group", allowed up in 30 minute intervals, is restricted to about 10 people.
If you have a chance to go, I highly recommend it. It's worth every step.
