About Len Lye

Len Lye, born Leonard Charles Huia Lye (July 5, 1901 - May 15, 1980), was born in Christchurch, New Zealand. He was an experimental film-maker, poet, painter and kinetic sculptor. He is one of New Zealand's most widely-known modernist artists.
Len Lye spent time in Australia and Samoa until 1926 when he moved to London, then in 1944 he moved to New York.
In 1977, Len Lye returned home to oversee the first New Zealand exhibition of his work at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery. Shortly before his death in 1980, Lye and his supporters established the Len Lye Foundation, to which he gave his work.
