Welcome!

The Flickr LEGO Military Group is excited and proud to announce its first Military Building Competition.

While LEGO has yet to produce an official Military theme of its own, there have
always been LEGO fans out there building tanks and warplanes. In recent years,
Military has been a steadily growing "unofficial" theme; and we really hope that
the prospect of winning glory and recognition on the merciless field of a LEGO
building competition may inspire some talented builders out there to try the
theme out for a MOC or two.

We're grateful to BrickArms for sponsoring the competition, so if you’re in need
of some minifig accessories, do consider checking out their impressive arsenal
of weaponry at brickarms.com/.

Veterans and recruits welcome!

Subject Matter:

We're looking for MOCs that have a specific military utility or theme to them.
Military MOCers traditionally focus on a timeline ranging from WWII to near
future, but we’re going to open that up a little to make the competition
exciting to more builders out there. Timewise, you can base your entry as far
back as the industrialized Imperial Age, or well into the future.

Bear in mind that when we say "military utility," we don't mean just anything
with guns. Dropships, atmospheric-capable "spaceships," futuristic tanks, and
the like are all fine, but we're not so interested in your run-of–the-mill armed
starfighter or moon buggy with missiles. We're also not looking for Gundam-style
Mecha, but that doesn't preclude legged walking machines that have a distinct
martial feel to them. We hope that the distinction is clear enough; and if at
all in doubt, get in touch with one of the judges before you start building.
We'll be happy to answer all questions.

When building, think about what role your MOC would fill - the final design
characteristics should be in keeping with its intended role. An armored
personnel carrier shouldn't be brimming with cannons, just as a bomber plane
shouldn't be armed to the teeth with air-to-air missiles.

Building Categories:

There are four building categories, which should leave things open enough to
cater to most military-oriented creations. The categories are as follows:

Vehicle MOC (air, land, or sea)
Model
Vignette
Diorama

Vehicle MOC:This is where most military-themed creations tend to fit in. This
category encompasses any tank, jeep, APC, plane, helicopter, patrol boat,
hovercraft, dropship, submarine, etc that you can come up with, based on your
own imagination. We ask that any entry in this category be in minifig scale, and
no longer than 64 studs in any direction.

Model: A model, as opposed to a MOC, is a replica of a real life (or
"predesigned") vehicle of some sort. If you want to build a scale model of the
USS Monitor, a Supermarine Spitfire, a T-80 tank, or the Space Marines APC from
Aliens, these would all fit into this category. Models can be any scale you
like, including micro, "approximately minifig," or maxifig.

Vignette: We all know what a vig is by now, right? A standard vig sits on an 8
by 8 base, typically depicts a scene, and maybe even represents something more
abstract. Building something a little bigger than this is OK, but try to keep
within the spirit of building as compactly as possible, and depict a snapshot of
one specific event or action taking place. If you don't have the time or brick
to start a larger MOC project, or are just getting your feet wet with the
Military theme, this maybe the category for you.

Diorama: If you'd like more space to spread out more than what you'd get from a
vig, then grab your entrenching tool, soldier - and dig in. We're going for a
theme centered around trenches, foxholes, bunkers, tunnels, and any other
dug-down military emplacement you can come up with. Possibilities are endless,
and pretty much anything minfig-related goes, so long as you are working with
landscaping, and some figs that are taking cover somewhere. There are no size
requirements; but you won't be judged primarily on size, so, as always, focus on
the details. If you're building a big diorama, take care to incorporate dug down
positions fairly prominently, don't just put a little foxhole in the corner of a
4 by 4 baseplate diorama.

Sweet Victory and the Spoils of War - Prizes:

Winners will be determined by judging; and the judges are Magnus Lauglo, Jas
Nagra, Fradel Gonzales, and Justin Harvey. We are excluded by strict
international conventions from entering the competition. If we need to bring in
another judge to break a tie, we will.

Full Military honors will be given to the very best entries! We will also be
handing out some COOL prizes, although we'd like to maintain the tactically
essential element of surprise, and wait to announce exactly what these are. A
cunning Intelligence Officer might deduce that with BrickArms sponsoring the
competition, it would seem highly probable that prizes will, at least in part,
be made up of BrickArms products.

There will be at least four winners and four prizes, but we may add more prizes
or award categories if that seems appropriate. And if we need to change or add
to the rules to keep things in line with the spirit of the competition, we will
do that too.

Guerilla and Unconventional MOCage - A Note on NonLEGO Elements:

NonLEGO elements have become widespread, although not universally embraced,
among military builders. You are welcome to use custom minifig accessories (such
as BrickArms minifig weapons) where appropriate. Torso stickers, other stickers,
and custom cockpits are also quite fine.

Beyond this, using nonLEGO elements will most likely NOT be counted in your
favor, especially when comparable LEGO elements are available. A good example of
what not to use would be Megablocks tank tracks, or any clone brand standard
bricks, in lieu of LEGO brand bricks.

Other Rules of Engagement:

Build something new! You may only enter MOCs which have not been posted online
yet.

We encourage you to post your MOCs on the LEGO Military group on Flickr -
www.flickr.com/groups/legomilitary/. An introductory Flickr account is
free. But we will also accept links to pictures on BrickShelf, MOCpages or
elsewhere.

You can enter as many MOCs as you like, in as many categories that you like.
Note that in the event that one very talented builder's MOCs win within
different categories, he or she may not actually win more than one prize.

If you post many pix of the MOC, please direct us to three main images that you
would like us to judge your MOC by for the purposes of the competition.
Remember, a decent photo/render counts for a lot when you are showing off your
builds! Please keep images under 1000pixels wide.

The deadline is Saturday 31st of May.

HERE is the link to the official submissions thread.

Motivation and Morale:

We've tried to make this competition accessible and interesting to many
builders, while keeping things focused on military building. If you're having a
hard time coming up with ideas, here are some pictures to give you a sense of
what AFOLS and some TFOLs have been building. These would ALL be eligible in one
of the competition categories if they hadn't been built already.
