When I hear that many things come to mind. Usually it's thoughts of Great Britain, or at least what I know about Great Britain; Doctor Who, Monty Python, Al Murray and of course Guinness. Being an American, I also think of our version of God Save The Queen; "America" (...My country tis of the... ). When thinking of Battle Bugs however, well that's where a whole bunch of interesting possibilities comes up.
For this month's challenge we'll be looking at the idea of Battle Bug Queens. Many insects have queens, as well as some other species. In biology this type of rigid social organization is called Eusociality. it is the highest order of natural social hierarchy. Individual bugs are literally born to their role in life, whether workers, warriors, drones, or the all mighty queen.
What does that mean for this challenge? It means that we'll be focusing on the mightiest member of any battle bug force, the Queen Battle Bug. Does that mean you have to decimate your Lego collection in order to build the biggest, baddest, most majestic Queen Bug you can conceive of? Not at all, although you certainly can... As with all Battle Bug challenges, you can interpret the title as literally, or as liberally as you want. You can of course make many interpretations of a queen bug. A mobile command center for a Battle Bug swarm, or a massive powerful fighting queen at the front lines of her army like the queen from Aliens. There are however countless other approaches.
One possibility is to make the Royal Guard. Battle Bugs tasked solely with the defense of their Queen. You could look to ants, bees, wasps, termites, or any other species and do a mechanical interpretation of their hive queen. Or if you really want to take a sideways approach, you could look towards the origin of homeland of the song God Save The Queen, and build a British themed bug, or a Battle Bugs inspired by the many species of insects native to the United Kingdom...
...Which brings me to our tie-in with a bunch of nuts in another, car themed group. That's right, LUGNuts June challenge is also titled "God Save The Queen", and as you can guess they'll be building British themed automobiles. Click here to find out more.
As always, Battle Bugs is opened to all themes, scales, and sizes. The challenge begins today, and runs through the end of June. Post your creations, and any questions you have here.
