Suggestion for Nominees - Introductions?

view profile

magnus_lauglo is a group administrator magnus_lauglo  Pro User  says:

Would it make sense for the Ambassador candidates to give a short introduction, and say a little something about what they've done community wise? Like a little: "Hello, this is who I am; this is why you should vote for me."

To some extent, this may quite likely end up being a popularity competition of sorts, but I feel that with so many builders out there with various screen names, it would be useful to know a little about the people you're considering voting for.

What do people think? If there is interest, I'll be happy to go first.

As always, PLMKWYT :)

Magnus has a great point, and I've suggested it prior to the voting. As flickr is becoming larger, so are the number of contact whom I don't know. There a good few candidates on the list whom I don't even know, so I naturally casted my votes to those I do know. I figure this may be the case for most voters. But it may be a bit late now, since I believe the majority of those who are going to vote have voted.

OK, I'll go first and I encourage others to follow.

Hello,

My name is Magnus and I build LEGO :) I'm 30, and have been building since I was 3 - though I was something of a closet TFOL, I never suffered through a true Dark Age.

Over the past few years, I've focused on building military vehicles, and have most recently been active in the Flickr Military LEGO group, which has really come into its own as an actual building community this year. For many years before that, I was active in the Castle community, and of course, Lugnet back in the day.

I live in Northern Virginia, and have been an active member of WAMALUG since '01. I also made a few contacts with some of the UK AFOLs when I was at school in England in '99-'03. I've attended a number of conventions in the US, and was the lead Castle coordinator at BrickFest in '04 and '05. I've also written a for BrickJournal.

I've been curious about the Ambassador program for a while, and I'd be honored to be able to represent the fan community to TLG. I think a good Ambassador should be active in the fan community, keep up with the newest AFOL trends and fads, try to avoid getting too involved in online drama, and be mindful of what is realistic to expect from the company.

I think that's my two bricks worth.

Thank you

Magnus

Better late than never. Below is a copy of my short bio from The Brother's Brick:

Nannan became involved with the online LEGO community in late 2004. Although he has never stopped building with LEGO since the age of nine, it wasn’t until his discovery of the multitude of diverse creations on Brickshelf that inspired him to take LEGO building to the next level.

Currently, Nannan builds in a variety of themes and his creations are usually associated with offbeat characteristics. You can find Nannan frequently browsing the forums of Classic-Space, FBTB, and Builders Lounge. He hosts his creations on Brickshelf, MOCpages, and Flickr. He has his own Bricklink store to generate income for his building expenses.

Nannan is currently an undergraduate at Washington University in St. Louis, where he is studying pre-med.

My turn =)

Aaron is an active member of the Builders Lounge community and a staff member. His primary role as staff member is to conduct interviews with members on a variety of LEGO related topics for the pleasure of fellow enthusiasts. He is also a member of the Classic Castle community where he has won several contests, and recently won the title of “Master Builder” through the site’s annual Colossal Castle Contest.

Aaron is an active member of the Flickr community where he helps to administrate LEGO based photo pools. He is also an active participant in Brisbane-based LEGO user group events, even hosting a LUG meeting and display at his own home. Aaron is interested in the the LEGO activities in the broader Australian and worldwide communities, and is a frequent visitor on LUGNET, MOCpages, Classic-Space, and Eurobricks.

Aaron's creations are often featured on the popular The Brothers Brick website and several other smaller online blogs. He has been asked to do interviews for the LAML podcast radio show and has become a reoccurring guest on the show discussing a variety of LEGO related topics. His work has attracted the attention of the Portuguese 0937 Portal LEGO community, who asked Aaron to do an interview, and also to write an article about himself for BrickJournal magazine.

Aaron's creations have also been featured on a number of “non-LEGO” sites such as abduzeedo.com - a graphic design website and gizmodo.com, a website featuring gadgets and toys, amongst others.

Aaron builds in the Castle theme, but his interest has spread to almost every LEGO theme.

Adrian Florea is a group administrator Adrian Florea says:

I want in! :D Ok, here's what I wrote LEGO a month ago, when I sent my application via e-mail:

My name is Adrian Florea, I am an AFOL from Romania. I am twenty one years old, a student in industrial design, and I am very interested in joining the LEGO Ambassador program.

I have been MOC-ing for two years now, I have had LEGO since my 4th birthday but it was never a serious hobby until now. I started being active on different internet based communities since almost two years. I started out with MOCpages, FBTB (, Flickr ( www.flickr.com/photos/olog/ ), Classic Space ( www.classic-space.com/news.php ), Builder's Lounge ( builderslounge.proboards80.com/index.cgi ), and just recently in the purpose of expanding my building abilities, Classic Castle. My username, on the internet community, is "Olog" .I am still active on all of these. I have placed well in contests so-far, and plan on competing in as many contests as I can. I have been contacted by Jan Beyer and Mel from Brickjournal. I recently had an interview in a Brazilian Design and Art magazine called "Zupi" ( www.zupi.com.br/ ), inquiring about my MOCs.

I am one of the very few AFOLs in Romania, and the only one that is active on an international level. Since five months, I have tried to contact AFOLs from Romania in the hope that we can form a community, just like any LUG in every country. I have set up a forum ( rolug.freeforums.org/ ), which has fourteen members at this moment.

My most often updated MOC gallery is my Flickr Page : www.flickr.com/photos/olog/

Tedward  Pro User  says:

Interesting to read but if someone needs to introduce themselves to me I would not even consider voting for them. I am certain that each person nominated is a friendly, qualified, interesting person but my votes went to three of the people whom I feel like I have got to know for their work in this community. Since involvement in the community is what being an ambassador is about (IMO) that influences my vote. Telling me about yourself is cool and may help me make a different decision next time but for now I based my decision on what I perceive as the depth of a nominee's involvement and my perception of their suitability for the role of LA.

That's all good and well. But perhaps not everyone here has three people they know well who are running for Ambassador.

You make a great point, Tedward, but I agree with magnus_lauglo. The LEGO fan community on Flickr is large and diverse enough that each of us may not have interacted with all of the people on the nominee list. That doesn't mean that the person isn't a worthy nominee, and this gives voters the opportunity to learn more about each person.

Taking you as an example, I think you're primarily a Castle builder, so you may not have interacted much with Flickrites like Magnus, Nannan, or Adrian, who are all very active in multiple themes with large communities here on Flickr. We should each certainly vote for who we think is most qualified, but these introductions may reveal activities, skills, or other qualifications that appropriately sway our votes.

And yes, I still need to write my own "stump speech." ;-)

I have to agree with what Duney said. Since I am an admin at Classic-Castle, I don't have the time to follow a lot of other forums as closely as I'd like. So while I might recognize someone's MOCs from Brickshelf and Flickr, I may now know of their other community involvement. Say we have someone who is an admin at De Bouwsteen actively posts on 1000Steine and MechaHub, and was an organizer of LEGO WORLD, I'd probably never know that. There's also the problem of those people who use different handles in different forums.

Tim keeps himself very busy with LEGO by both building and building community. His physical address is Brisbane (in Australia) and his physical age is 31 but his far more extensive online LEGO life is spread between sites like Stajinara, Flickr, Brothers-brick, LUGNET, LDraw and more.

Perhaps best known for his train creations, Tim was asked to participate in the Hobby Train set (10183) as well as various other NDA requiring projects. He also builds extensively in many other themes (so much so that some people think he's a spacer) and has a strange love for Soviet design. He also supplements his real bricks with virtual bricks and works on the LDraw SteerCo.

While living a life of exile from his homeland, Tim attended various Brickish events and the 2007 1000steine land in Berlin. He also particpates in the local Brisbane LEGO community.

Hey everyone, you may remember me from such MOCs as the Blacktron II, the Mystery Machine, and the Mistral to name a few of my favourite. I've been involved online since late '03 when I discovered Lugnet and I became much more involved after Brickfest PDX '04. I was a member of the Vancouver Lego Club when I lived out west, started the Fraser Valley Lego Club with fellow Abbotsfordian Robin Sather, and hope to start a club here in Manitoba eventually. Any Manitobans out there interested? Most recently, Lino Martins and I have founded LUGNuts, a Lego car club, here on Flickr.
I am 32 years old and live in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada with my lovely wife, Kathy and my rambunctious 2-year old boy, Oscar.

Better late than never? Too long? Eh, I'm too tired to edit right now...
------------
LEGO figures prominently in many of my earliest memories, and I continued building all the way through college, where I built a Romanesque castle on six baseplates for an upper-division history course (sorry, no pics). Living in Waltham, MA after college, I took my first steps as an adult into permanent LEGO fandom when The Construction Site opened. I haven't looked back since.

After discovering LUGNET nearly ten years ago, I lurked for a couple of years until I ran across FBTB, where I was a very active member for several years. FBTB opened up a whole world of online forums, including Classic-Castle.com, Classic-Space.com, and Builders Lounge. In the last couple of years, I've watched LEGO fandom on Flickr grow from a backup image-hosting site for a small number of builders to a full-fledged community in its own right. I feel a small measure of pride in thinking that I may have contributed to the growth of our community here through my photos, comments, unrelenting onslaught of faves (heh heh), mass group invitations, and leadership during the "Brickshelf Crisis of 2007."

Ultimately, though, the core of my community-building centers around the LEGO blog I created nearly three years ago, The Brothers Brick (or "TBB" to friends). Starting as just my personal blog, TBB has grown to become a six-contributor team blog that averages more than 40,000 visitors a month from 150 countries. I've also used my Japanese language skills to bridge the gap now and then with important info for Japanese fans and Japanese news for English-speaking LEGO fans.

TBB contributors scour the net for the latest LEGO creations and news, often leading to additional coverage for the creation or news item elsewhere on the net. Being featured on TBB has several times been the first step toward broader recognition from the "non-AFOL" world for a builder or their creation.

As a LEGO Ambassador during the 2007-2008 cycle, I've worked behind the scenes to represent you to LEGO, passed along your input, and shared information from LEGO when I could.

I believe the LEGO Ambassador program has enormous potential. I'm aware of only a handful of other companies that show such clear commitment to incorporating the voice of fans like us into their corporate culture. I would be honored if you'd consider me as one of your representatives for the 2007-2008 LEGO Ambassador cycle.
