About Leftfield SERIES

With Leftfield-Series we are creating an international magazine that deals with photoseries. New editions are published four times a year, always at the beginning of the new season. In every single edition we want to give space for up to 12 photographers to tell their photostories. Serious or off the wall, political or far from reality, romantic or frightening. We want to show series, which invite to dream or which shock. We want to tell stories, that grab you, that make you laugh or force you to think. A challenge for the reader, for the photographer and also for us.

Leftfield stands for series of images which convince because their content and themes are well-founded. Series, which really do tell stories and reveal themselves best on paper.
For us Leftfield means that we give our undivided attention to image and text and in the issue only concentrate on those. We refrain from technical discussions, news from the photography market or promotions like “ the series of the quarter”. Here we tie in with the ideas of Alfred Stieglitz and his magazine Camera Work.
About 100 years ago Alfred Stieglitz and Edward Steichen founded the photographic association Photo-Secession with the aim to establish photography as an independent and fully-fledged art-form. In the end they reached their goal by means of their New York gallery 291 and not least via their magazine Camera Work.

Even though photography has been a recognized art-form for a long time, we absolutely do see parallels to contemporary photography. We advocate the art of photography and do not set conditions to the technical way of working. It doesn’t interest us if the images are made digital or analogue, whether they undergo post-processing or not. What matters to us, is that they convey something that is alive, something that can be sensed.
