About Lechlade-on-Thames

This is a group for people who live or have visited Lechlade and want to share their favourite images of the beautiful Cotswold town.

Lechlade was a borough and market town from the early 13th century, it later played a part in the Cotswold wool trade. Its chief function, however, was as a staging post for goods and passenger traffic. By the 17th century, cheese was shipped down the river from Lechlade and when the Thames and Severn canal was opened, the inhabitants traded in coal. Late 19th century visitors found it attractive for fishing and boating.

Lechlade is located at the southern edge of the Cotswolds. It is the highest point at which the River Thames is navigable. The town is named after the River Leach which joins the Thames near here.

The town is a popular venue for tourism and river-based activities. There is a convenience store, food outlets, a garden center and a 'Christmas shop'. The 15th Century parish church of St Lawrence is mentioned in the Domesday Book and well worth a visit. Although the present building was completed in 1476, there is evidence of the existence of a church in the 13th century. In the center of the town, there is a large car park which used to be the site of the daily market.
