Leather Care

Hi
My wife has more than 15 pair of leather gloves which are used both in bed and for outdoor use. However, after some time and use the gloves have become less shiny and I dont know how to polish them. I have tried with vaseline but that does only a part of the job. The gloves are not as shiny as when they were bought. Any good suggestions?

I saw on many websites mentioning dubbin was good. Have not tried it yet.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shoe_polish.
"Since medieval times, dubbin, a waxy product, was used to soften and waterproof leather; however, it did not impart shine.[3] It was made from natural wax, oil and tallow. As leather with a high natural veneer became popular in the eighteenth century, a high glossy finish became important, particularly on shoes and boots. In most cases, a variety of homemade polishes were used to provide this finish, often with lanolin or beeswax as a base."
I was about to ask you to refer to www.leatherforums.com/links/index.php? and I saw it was closed for summer. In the threads, there is a person selling leather doctor. However, I googled and I can't tell you exactly which one is it.
I'm not particular about shine, however more on protection and care. As I buy and sell kid leather gloves on ebay, I use Scotchgard Leather Protector whenever I get the kid gloves or lambskin coats, jackets, pants, skirts and do it half-yearly products3.3m.com/catalog/au/en005/home/home_care/node_WZD....
It does give you back a bit of the shine, clean and protect at the same time.

Thanks for the good advise
I think we will have to try "dubbin" and see what happens. On the other hand, the lack of "shine" on the gloves is always a good excuse for bying a new pair of leather goves for my wife. By the way, I think ebay is a great place for bying leather gloves to a fair price. You can realy be lucky to find an excelent pair of long leather gloves to a price below 40 $.

Hi akmal_slipknot
Thanks for the tip.
I have used this method for my wife's kidskin/lambskin leather gloves and leather coat in the past until I found 3M (see above).
Be careful, some leathers may run if the tanning is not so solid. Also the baby oil may seep through and mess up the lining if it is too soaked.
Anyway, quality leather with good tanning, the color should not run. I will advise to use on a small portion first (as instructed on most products) to check out.
Baby Oil
Pros:
1. Low cost
2. Easily available
3. Good shine
Cons:
1. Can be messy
2. Takes long time to dry, need to wipe off excess
3. Does not protect the leather from being moldy, constantly needs to reapply
3M half a year once.
