About Lawrence Stanley Lee 1909 - 2011
This group is for photographs of stained glass windows (also sketches, murals, etc) created by Lawrence Stanley Lee. His son, Stephen and I are compiling a collection of his works in celebration of his 100th birthday (September 2009) on which occasion he enjoyed a party attended by family, friends and former assistants.
In January 2010 I was lucky enough to meet Lawrence Lee and take him to see one of his windows in Pett, Sussex.
Lawrence Lee died peacefully on 25 April 2011 after a short illness, aged 101 years and 7 months.

It is hoped that we will be able to visit and photograph most of the windows in the UK at least. Future plans for the collection may eventually include a book but we are presently at a very early stage. Please feel free to add your images of his glass to the group and be assured that we will not use any of your photographs without your permission.
If you set out to photograph any of his windows, we would be most grateful if you could also try to photograph his signature.
If you have any stories to tell, please share them in the discussions.
I am blogging most of our travels which you can follow here.

Other contemporary artists' windows, photographed by our members, can be found here.
Stained glass is energized through its relationship with light and changes according to the time of day, the seasons of the year and the weather. All affect - sometimes subtly, sometimes dramatically - the image that is perceived, for stained glass is the most ancient and cunning form of kinetic art. Light, the intangible phenomenon by which the world is made visible, has, since time immemorial been symbolically equated with goodness, revelation and beauty, and has, therefore, been a focal point of the philosophies and religions of mankind. Lawrence Lee - Stained Glass (1976)

WINDOWS
Live links in the headings will take you to a discussion thread for that county (or country) at the top of which will be links to photos from individual churches (or other buildings). There will be, for some, also links to discussions about windows within that county.
Alongside some of the church (or other building) names will be links in square brackets. These will take you to more information on the windows - often LSL's own words, sometimes stories surrounding the making of the windows, and occasionally our interpretations of the themes and imagers. Members are very welcome to add to these threads.
This list is fairly complete, although there will be some omissions as we continue to discover new windows from time to time. If you spot any errors, please do let us know.
