Well, that's 7 total including me, almost critical mass! If we get one more that's two groups of four. A few questions:
1) Does anybody want to lead a group? I'm no expert but I'm organizing so I guess I'd better put my hand up to lead one of them.
2) Does anybody want to coordinate models? So far we'll need two.
3) Does anybody have any experience with local parks departments? I'm going to contact the BH parks next week to see how they feel about the idea.
Should be fun!

I did some basic research on this before. Technically, public (city/state) parks will require a permit to use stands or equipment that could potentially impede traffic (foot or otherwise).
To get a permit, you will need to show you have general liability insurance. I believe most photographer's and business insurance, carries the minimum amount of insurance which is $1M, so if any professional photographers want to offer to get the license then we should be good to go.
Often, the hardest part about getting a permit is finding out who is in charge of issuing them. There's a web site for CA state parks, but for the city ones I'm not sure. Each city has their own permit issuing department, usually their Media relations or marketing departments.
Otherwise, we can just shoot using lights on VALs and be ready to move quickly if someone asks us to. IEither way, i'm still in. If each group has 4 people then that's 3 lights and one photographer for each set up. Works for me.

Well I have photography insurance that covers state, and federal parks liability requirements. So can always submit that for strobist if we needed to at anytime. City to city is different. NY being strict, no tripods in the square without permit. I never used it, but I have insurance if we need it.
Were are we thinking of going?

Hi. What other pieces of the puzzle are missing? I have never been to any of the LA strobist events so I am wondering in what areas I or others can help in? Is there a model release form? Is there a photographer release form (if needed)? Should we start searching for models or does someone already have a contact? Please let us know so we can make a joint effort.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about the permits either. I mean there's no money being made here. IMHO think the biggest concern (from police) is people getting hurt tripping over gear and what not. I think if we just stay lean and mobile, there shouldn't be any problems.

Hi kevinsarayba, there's actually a web site that covers a lot of your questions! :)
www.lastrobist-models.com/
There is a model release form that we've been using at these meets, but if you have your own, feel free to use them too.
I think we just need to decide on the specifics: meeting location, time. Once that happens then we can start putting a call out for models.

Hey Everybody,
Nice to see the interest growing. I'm out of town at the moment, but I'll be back next week and will do some scouting. I'm thinking Westside somewhere, to be (kinda) equidistant from Hollywood/Valley/Beaches. Maybe Cheviot Hills park on Motor, Roxbury Park in BH, or possibly Culver CIty.
@ kangster: Sounds like a plan re: models. Re: the time, I was thinking afternoon into evening so we can avoid toppy light and then practice balancing to ambient as the sun goes down.
Re: permits, insurance, releases, etc. I'm planning on doing a little research for my own education so I'll let you know what I find out. Sounds like some of you have more experience with this kind of stuff than I, so let's compare notes in a few days.

BTW, I added the model release form to the lastrobist-models.com website. This gives me another chance to ask for people here to contribute some text to the site.
Specifically:
* advice for models
* how to get your photos -- we need to set up a simple system for this so models don't have to chase down a dozen photographers for their shots.
IMPORTANT: Once the next meetup is firmed up, someone email me the details so I can add it to the site.

Well, I dropped by a few local parks over the weekend and this is what I learned:
Roxbury Park - Forget it, they barely listened to the request and pushed me toward the BH film office. The film office informed me that the park makes no distinction between amateur & professional photography.
Cheviot Hills - They were extremely friendly and thought it would be no problem but referred me to the film office just in case. They were also very friendly and said as long as no money is changing hands then go ahead and knock yourself out, just don't take any pictures of kids without permission.
I'll take some photos of potential locations & post them here in a bit. Here's the website:
www.laparks.org/dos/parks/facility/cheviotHillsPk.htm
In the meantime, if anybody has any other suggestions, by all means post them.
Cheers,
J

Just curious as I have never been to a Strobist meet up... How long do the models usually stay? Does it get tiresome for them to model for more than 2 hours or is this something they are used to? Again, just an idea... Would it be ideal to have sets (1st set from 1-3:30 and 2nd set from 3:30 to 6)?
Posted 43 months ago.

, : Gotcha, you're on the alternate list.
, my experience has been that the models generally stay the entire time, and yes, a break is nice; maybe somebody can bring a cooler & we can chip in for some refreshments?
, I agree, a little longer would be better. Sunset is around 4:45 though, so by 5pm it's pretty dark.
How does 1pm-5pm sound? Gives people time to each lunch & travel beforehand, and if we want to shoot after dark, we can always continue.
If we're 3 groups of 4 photographers and we rotate models so that each model gets to work with each group, we could still get in three 1 hour sessions with an hour left over to get organized, rotate, take a break, etc.

Hey Mizz Maze...
I wasn't going to say anything but since you brought it up I will through my 2 cents worth in. I think there should be no limit. I think the Seatle Strobist group gets something like 70-100 people!
Surely if Seatle can handle it L.A. can!

I agree with Mizz Maze, Dave, and Mike but at the same time I understand StobeVisual's direction of being organized. I think I read in one of the earlier posts that there were more models than there were photographers. So, I assume the intent was to have/ensure 4 photographers to a model. Maybe the waiting list should really signify there is a need for 2 more photographers (ideally). Again, I have not been to a strobist event but I am just adding to the brainstorm.

Ok, the people (well, at least some of them...) have spoken!
I originally figured 15 people (12 'togs + 3 models) would walk the line in terms of drawing attention in a public space, but after talking it over with kangster, we decided up to 20 photographers could work. That would be 5 groups of 4, with one model per group for a total of 25 people. That makes our current count 14, with 6 spaces left.
I took some snaps of the park today, and kangster & I will drop by this Sunday and scout it out to see how busy it is. If you'd like to join us, shoot me a flickr mail.

I've been to a few meets (not here) where organizing into mini-groups on the day was a little tricky, so here's a form to help gather a bit of knowledge beforehand:
spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?key=pWCgqhHoXuFaWjA2Vp6C-XA
Please fill it out if you're planning to attend - it's just a little information about amount of gear, type of gear, level of experience, etc.
Thanks!

I dropped by the park today and there were a few soccer games, a dog show (!), and a few BBQs on, but it wasn't very crowded and there were plenty of places to shoot so that bodes well for next Sunday.
Now, MODELS... Let's go for 5 models. Who can help arrange?
@ Bobby Analog: You'll be fine if you just bring a camera. There's more than enough gear in each group and as tschundler said people are happy to pass around the trigger.
@ Dennis_Lee & hermosawave: You're in!

A few thoughts for Sunday:
1) Seriously, charge your batteries, and bring spares.
2) Bring a dozen or so business cards or business card-sized pieces of paper so you can share your contact details with the models or other photographers.
3) Label your gear. With everybody pitching in it can get confusing, especially when it starts to get dark.
4) You'll probably want to eat beforehand or throw an energy bar & a bottle of water in your bag. We might take a break around 3 if everyone wants a rest, but as far as I know there is no food available at the park.
5) Bring your camera, lenses, flashes, triggers, umbrellas, stands and any modifiers you have. Gear probably won't be a problem, but it will be nice to have options.
6) Come with an idea - think up something (or a few things) you'd like to try.
7) Be ready to pitch in to hold a stand, reflector, or whatnot. We're going to have a good photographer-model ratio, but everybody won't be shooting 100% of the time.
8) Forecast is cloudy and a bit cool.
9) I'll be the tallest guy there, so introduce yourself when you see me.
Alright, let's shoot!
